ARTISTIC STATEMENT
on
RESPONSE PIECES

A Response Piece- for me- is creative action rooted in an emotional reaction to another artists' work, an event or experience. Pieces vary considerably. I most often compose in prose and/or audio using a variety of traditional as well as modern instruments (Piano, Bass, Percussion, Guitar, Voice). For pieces involving audio, a core-concept (rough) sketch is recorded using a Tascam 4-Track. I then turn to collaborators (among them Mcknight Award winning composer Lorren Stafford, guitar impresario and arranger Ben Bisanz) who interpret tracks, then assist in developing song structure/environments. A response piece comes to fruition when it is performed live or is preserved in a studio recording for future listening.
