Ishmael - He's the narrator of this story and a member of
the Pequod crew . He doesn't have a significant role but much of his part is to just tell the story. Ishmael is very intelligent
and well educated. He seems to be good at everything but committed to nothing Ahab
- He's the obsessed captain of the Pequod who lost his leg to Moby Dick. As a captain, he is firm but not unfair
other than the fact that he manipulated his crew to search only for the white whale but at times he shows a soft-hearted
side. Moby Dick - The great white sperm whale. Moby Dick also known as the White
Whale. He is an infamous and dangerous threat to seamen. Starbuck- He's the
first mate of the Pequod. He is a religious man but he's not pushy about his beliefs. Starbuck isn't fond of his captain Ahab
and thinks hes extremely mad. Queequeg- He is Starbuck’s skilled harpooner
and Ishmael’s best friend. He was once a prince from a South Sea island but now spends his life on the sea. He
is brave and giving, he also is an influence on Ishmael. He's seen as a savage because of his body type and the intimidation
he poses on everyone. Stubb- He's the second mate of the Pequod . He's got
good humor and is generally seen as popular. He's constantly trusting in fate believing that things are meant to
happen and there's nothing him or anyone else can do about it. Flask-
He's the third mate of the Pequod and h is body type is short and stocky. Flask has an attitude that leads him to
get into confrontations with everyone and he cares about nothing. His stature has gotten him the nickname “King-Post.”
He enjoys the thrill of killing whales for the fun of it and takes pride in it. Tashtego-
He's Stubb’s harpooner. Tashtego has various jobs that he does on the Pequod, such as tapping the case of
spermaceti in the whale’s head. He's also seen as a savage like Queequeg, however he's not as intelligent as him. Tashtego
constantly craves rum as any other sailor would. Daggoo- He's Flask’s
harpooner and a physically enormous African. Daggoo isn't as important in the narrative than either Queequeg or Tashtego.
Pip- He's a young black boy who is like the mascot of the
Pequod. Pip has a small role in the beginning of the story but becomes important when he goes insane after being left
to drift alone in the sea. Fedellah - He's a strange old man who Ahab has brought
on the ship who is unknown to most of the crew. Fedellah has a turban around his head made from his own hair, and
he wears a black Chinese jacket and pants. He serves as a prophet to Ahab. Fedallah stays away from the rest of
the crew. Peleg- He's a retired whale man of Nantucket and a Quaker. He's one of
the owners of the Pequod along with Captain Bildad who takes care of hiring the crew. Peleg is more generous than
Bildad. Bildad- He is also a Quaker and a ex-whale man from Nantucket
who owns a large share of the Pequod . Bildad isn't as generous as Peleg especially when discussing wages. Father
Mapple - He's a former wwhale manand now the preacher in the New Bedford WWhale mans Chapel. He is an example of
someone whose trials have led him toward God rather than bitterness or revenge. Gabriel
- He's a sailor aboard the Jeroboam . Gabriel has said that Moby Dick is the incarnation of the Shaker god and that any efforts
to harm him will conclude in a disaster. Captain Boomer - He's the captain of
the whaling ship the Samuel Enderby . Boomer lost his arm in an accident involving Moby Dick. Unlike Ahab, Boomer
is glad to have escaped with his life and ddoesn'thave anger in him to try and destroy the whale. He's the opposite of
Ahab, as the two men react in different ways to a similar experience.
