Snipers are known worldwide for there marksmanship. The term "sniper" orginated in the 1800's with the British Army in India where the snipe was hunted. The snipe was a small and fast bird. The sucessful snipe hunter was an expert shot and very good at other aspects of hunting. They can kill targets at 1000 yards effciently. The standard U.S. sniper rifle is chambered in .308 Winchester (7.62x51mm NATO) The .308 is good for shooting up to 800 yards(874 meters). For distances over 800 yards(874 meters) a .50BMG is used. The BMG has an effective range around 1300 yards(1422 meters). The .300 Win mag is also used for long range shots. It's effective to around 1000 yards(1094 meters). Snipers use a form of camoflage known as Ghillie Suits. Ghillie suits consist of a base to start on(usually B.D.U.'s) burlap, and tough canvas. Ghillie Suits effectively break up the sniper's out line. But the sniper must be still or the suit does him no good. Ghillie Suits orginated in Scotland to help catch poachers.
