Algil's Birth Place

                         Trivandrum,the lush green city at the southern tip of India, spans an area of 2192 Sq.Km, has an average population of around 3000000 - the place where I am born. The city gets its name from the word, Thiruvanathapuram, meaning the city of Anantha or the abode of the sacred Serpent Anantha on which Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the Hindu trinity, reclines.
                         Trivandrum, the capital of the state of Kerala is a beautiful seaside city built on seven hills.The famous Sri. Padmanabha Swami Temple is dedicated to Vishnu and is a landmark in the city.

Sreepadmanabha Swamy Temple

This temple, built by Raja Marthanda Varma in 1733 A.D. is a fine specimen of South Indian architecture. Lord Vishnu reclines here on Anantha the serpent. The magnificient temple tower rises in seven storyes against the reflecting pool in front.

Observatories

Located on the highest point of the city above the sea level. There is a well-laid out garden and is one of the eye catching architectural landmarks of Trivandrum.

Science & Technology Museum

The Science and Technology Museum is located in the heart of the city., exhibits scores of items highlighting science, technology and electronics.

Kanakakunnu Palace

Is a striking building with unique architectural design. And is also a splendid collection of natural history specimens which includes valuable pieces of mythology and art.

Situated in in the same campus as the Science and Technology Museum, it provides a panoramic experience of the universe with advanced projection technology.

Aruvikkara

It is both a pilgrim centre and a picnic spot. On the banks of the Karamana river, this spot houses a Bhagavathy temple with a waterfall nearby. A stream with fish that appears to be fed by visitors is another attraction.

Aruvikkara

A pilgrim centre and a place of tourist interest, Aruvikkara is situated on the banks of the Karamana river 16 km from Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala. There is an ancient temple here dedicated to Bhagavathi, built on a rock on the right bank of the river. There is an Inspection Bungalow here and the reservation authority is the Asst: Executive Engineer, Kerala water authority.


Aruvippuram

This place is 24 km, away from Trivandrum near Neyyattinkara. There is a small Temple built by Sree Narayana Guru which attracts a large number of worshippers during the 'Sivarathri' festival. There is a small waterfall here and the name of this place is derived from this waterfall. There are buses to Neyyattinkara from Trivandrum.


Padmanabhapuram Palace

54 km away from Trivandrum on the way to Nagarcoil, this palace was once the royal residence of the Travancore kings before they shifted the capital from Padmanabhapuram to Trivandrum. An old fort is situated here. The wooden palace contains 17th and 18th century murals. The construction of this palace is typical of the nantive architectural idioms and fascinating example of art and craftsmanship.


Nishagandhi Dance Festival

Indias leading exponents of almost all classical dance forms including Bharathanatyam,Odissi, Mohiniyattam and Kathak perform at the Nishagandhi o p e n-a i r auditorium at Trivandrum. A grand treat for lovers of dance. 21st to 27th February every year


Onam

The biggest and most important festival,Onam is a harvest festival celebrated through out Kerala for four days. According to legend, it is on the first day that the good Asura king Mahabali who once ruled Kerala, comes from exile to visit his beloved people. Homes are adorned with floral decorations in preparation for his visit. Onam Tourist Week is a cultural feast of art and folk presentations at 20 venues in Trivandrum and other major districts. The festival is marked with elephant processions, Kathakali dances, fireworks, water carnivals and vallamkali,the famous snake boat race. Special feasts prepared for Onam are not to be missed. August / September every year.


Navarathri

A nine day festival of the Goddess of knowledge and music, a musical concert is held every evening for nine days at the Navarathri Mandapam of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum. It is celebrated during October/November every year.


Neyyar Dam

Situated 32 km away from Trivandrum, this is a popular picnic spot with a lake and a dam. Facilities for boating are provided  in the reservoir. There is a Crocodile Farm and a lion Safari Park. Frequent buses are available from Kattakkada, 20 k away from Trivandrum.


Sarkara, Chirayinkeezhu

This place is situated 40 km away from Trivandrum in Chirayinkeezhu. The Bhagavathy temple here celebrates the annual festival 'Bharani' during March/April every year. The 'Kaliyoottu' in this temple is performed one month before Bharani Utsavam.


Agasthyakoodam

This is a prominent peak in the Sahyadri ranges and is conspicuous for its height and isolation when seen from a distance. For about 2000 feet in the line of the range, it rises up in the form of a sharp pointed cone. This peak can be approached on foot from Boanacadu (61 km from Trivandrum) and from Neyyar dam (32 km).
