RZA
Hits By Jon Caramanica (Cdnow) In the 1990s, rap had no cult of personality greater than the RZA, the mechanic behind the sonic and economic machinations of the Wu-Tang Clan. As befitting an ego of his size, he's added a personal greatest-hits collection to the slew of second-string downtime Wu projects. The timing may be poor, but the wisdom is as clear as day -- all of the Wu-Tang Clan's significant early output brought together on one album - "Method Man," "Incarcerated Scarfaces," "Brooklyn Zoo," "C.R.E.A.M."; the list goes on. Also "Winter Warz," which was criminally left off the Wu-Chronicles collection, finds its home here, easily shining as the brightest Wu moment since "Protect Ya Neck." Conveniently omitted is the RZA's weaker output; most tracks here are from 1996 or earlier, before he got caught up in multiple personalities and film aspirations and delegated most of the production duties downward. Also blessedly omitted are almost all references to Bobby Digital. The analog Wu was far better. |
