Presidential adviser James Carville, in a commentary in the Washington Post on Jan. 10, poked fun at the Post's coverage of the attacks on President Clinton, in which ``a headline screams that the Whitewater probe is nearing `a crucial phase,'|'' and in which the first paragraph ``boldly claims that the Whitewater investigation is coming to `a critical juncture.'|''

Carville recounts numerous instances over the past two years where the Post had made the same claim. ``And now,'' Carville writes, ``over a year later, readers of your paper are trying to determine if we are now at a `critical juncture' or a `critical phase' in the Whitewater inquisition. Or, perhaps, it's only an `important phase.' The truth of the matter is that the best way to use the word `critical' in this case is to be critical of Starr's goofy and protracted investigation and to be critical of the media for their uncritical reporting of Starr's political witch hunt.''
