SectionsBeautiful vs. PhotogenicClose-ups
Garden PhotographyEquipmentBooks |
Extreme Close-upsExtreme close-up photography delves deep into the unseen worlds of a flower, and can be fascinating and unusually beautiful. However, extreme close-up photographs take time and patience to set up, and not many people do them. A tripod and cable release are mandatory, and focusing is critical. A small aperture is best for sharpness, but requires longer exposures. Since capturing even the smallest movement of the flower would ruin the photograph, you need either bright natural light or some sort of flash. For moderate close-up photographs you can use many different lenses, but for extreme close-ups you need either a macro lens, extension tubes, bellows, or some combination of these. Bellows are not recommended for the field: they are bulky, tear easily, and are hard to use. Extension tubes are much better.
