APL Newsletter, vol. 13 no.2, 2008

 1.  New Year’s Lunch (27th of January) Report

We enjoyed a sunny winter afternoon at The Brasserie, the restaurant of the French language school(日仏学院Nichi-futsu Gakuin). Having French cuisine at the restaurant beside the beautiful quiet garden birds are singing, I could not believe it was near to JR Iidabashi station.  The school has a fancy library and a lovely French bookstore too.

We talked about some plans of this year to visit, for example, the new-built Tokyo American Club Library in Takanawa, The Tokyo University Main Library, and so on. We also discussed what day of the week is best for APL meetings.

Just after leaving the restaurant, I noticed a guideboard aside the steep slope. The name of slope was Oh-saka(逢坂). The board said there was a gentleman from Kyoto during the Edo period. He met a beautiful woman here and they became a loving couple but he had to return to Kyoto and died there.  Then the woman had dreams of having dates at this slope. It was the reason this slope is called 〝oh”(meet, old word)〝saka″(slope).  There might have been a quiet restaurant here in the Edo era too.

(2) Report on a visit to The Japan Foundation Information Center

        (JFIC) Library.

On the November 17th, six APL members visited JFIC Library in Roppongi.  Ms Kurita, a librarian, first introduced the institution and we looked around this well-designed library with a souvenir shop. You can visit the Library at its website. And Ms Kurita said any questions about the library or Japan Foundation are welcome.    http://www.jpf.go.jp/e/jfic/lib/index.html

We were pleasantly surprised to find that the Library has a collection of Western and Japanese rare books passed on from the former institution, KBS (Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai 1934-1971).  There was also an amazing and scenic view of Akasaka from Library’s 20th floor perch.
For anyone interested in Japanese studies, this is a most excellent collection with deep coverage in all areas Japanese, and a fine collection of academic journals and magazines in Japanese Studies
. The Library is open to all and grants borrowing privileges to the public.

After the tour some of us took a subway to visit the Tokyo Kotenkai Auction, an annual Japanese antiquarian book auction in Ochanomizu. We were able to experience the feel of Washi (Japanese paper) and the scent of Edo period exuded from the books.                                                   (T. Koizumi)

Where would YOU like to go?

Help us plan the next APL Library Visit

There are so many excellent world-class libraries in Tokyo.  APL is planning another excursion in July and we would like to know some libraries, or which type of library you  would be interested in visiting. Which Saturday in July would be best?  Please send your recommendations to Mr. Toru Koizumi at torulib@rikkyo.ne.jp.  In the coming weeks we will start making plans for our next fascinating library tour.

APL Visit to Meiji University Library and Museum

On Saturday March 17th APL members and their guests were given an inside look at Meiji University’s impressive Museum and Library.  The tour started in the University’s Museum, which features a large collection of exhibition catalogs from museum all over Japan. The museum focuses on issues of law and punishment in the Edo Period. It features a superb collection of implements of punishment from Japan and elsewhere, including gallows, guillotine, and a kind of Japanese version of ‘stocks’ in which prisoners were locked up and exposed to the public who were given the opportunity of using a saw blade on the exposed head of the helpless captive. The museum also featured a fine collection of Japanese archaeological finds extending to pre-historical times.

After the museum we were given a tour of the extensive books and periodicals collections of the library by Mr. Fumio Izawa, Manager of the Library’s Department of General Affairs. Meiji University has managed to build and store an impressive collection by putting significant amounts of material on microfilm, which are accessible to users by way of a fast automated retrieval system. Another large part of the collection employs a sophisticated compressed shelving system.

Finally we were treated to a selection of a Meiji’s superb rare maps collection, which includes numerous beautiful maps from the Edo and Meiji Periods and a Dutch Atlas Nouveau of 1692. This was only a selection of their very impressive collection some of which has been scanned and is available on Meiji Libraries website at.

As with all APL library tours and visits this most enjoyable and enlightening tour was arranged and coordinated by Mr. Toru Koizumi of Rikkyo Universtiy Library.
