The area of the San Francisco waterfront that spans from the Bay Bridge and the hallowed Ferry building north to Pier 39 is called the Embarcadero. Though I can not find it in writing, I suspect that this area of waterfront got its name from this being the place where passengers and cargo embarked on voyages out of the gate or perhaps arrived in the city.

The Embarcardo at the turn of the century was part of a bustling port. This is where commerce and people entered and left the city. The Ferry Building was the main port of entry for boats to other cities in the bay and this area was the hub of activity. The Ferry Building still has ferries entering and leaving, but not in the numbers it had prior to the opening of the bridges into the city. Most of the shipping moved south to the Hunters Point ship yards and the ship yards in the industrial part of the city. In fact in the late 1980’s, with a gray monolith of a half built freeway blocking the sun out, the Embarcardo had become a rather dark, dingy and unused place.

However the city has made severe moves to reclaim this piece of prize waterfront. The freeway was brought crashing down (with the help of the 1989 earthquake) to bring more light into the area. The once unused piers have been given fact lifts to show turn of the century elegance and those piers not used for shipping and seafaring activities are used for a variety of other purposes. The street and sidewalks have been widened and lighted up. With all of this remodeling the Embarcadaro has become a quite pleasant area of San Francisco.

These photographs provide an overview of the area known as the Embarcardo to give you a sense of its elegance and its choice location with views of the bridge and east bay. All of the pictures are thumbnails. To view the full photo, click on the thumbnail.

The Ferry Building, with its impressive clock tower, is one of the most notable landmarks on the San Francisco waterfront. Designed by Polk, the tower was modeled after the Giralda tower of the Cathedral of Sevilla (Spain). At the time of construction, it was apparently to model buildings from ancient structures in Europe. Since 1906 the Ferry Building has been the entry point of passengers by boat from all over they bay.
