John Slaven served at Yorktown during the Revolutionary War.

John Slaven was born in 1723 in County Tyrone, Ulster, Ireland. He died at his home "Meadowvale" in Meadowvale Community near Vanderpool in Highland County, VA. Scotch-Irish in descent, he was of the Presbyterian faith and by trade a weaver and farmer.

He came to New York City around 1740, at the age of 17. He worked for a time in Philadelphia as a weaver, and was in Sussex County, Delaware during 1746 and 1747. At that time, he married Elizabeth Stuart/Stewart, who had been born in Scotland and came to Baltimore and then Delaware as an indentured servant shortly after the great Battle of Culloden in 1745. Her father Daniel Stuart died in Sussex, Delaware in 1774. Daniel was the son of John Stewart and the grandson of Dr. John Stewart, who had come to America some time earlier.

From Delaware, he and his wife migrated to Rockingham County, VA and settled on Crook's Creek near Clinton and Staunton. In 1777, they moved to Bath County, VA near the headwaters of Jackson's River and settled in the Meadowdale Community near what is now Monterey, VA. His descendants still live on the land.

While in Delaware, John was enlisted in the army of King George II commanded by Captain John Shannon. He must have been discharged by 1747 as records state this date as the last time payments were made to him.

He married Elizabeth Stuart. She was born 1726 in Scotland and died 1795 in Highland Co, VA. She was the daughter of Daniel Stuart. Go to her Stuart line here.
