Generation I

Johannes Dilli was born about 1744 in the Palatine region of Germany. He died about 1840 at Brown's Mountain, Bath Co, VA.

Johannes Dilli arrived in Maryland aboard the ship "Braithard Gail" about 1762. In April of that year he "took the oath," which was a lengthy affair claiming loyalty to England. It is believed that Johannes Dilli anglicized his name as time passed to John Dilley. Sometime between 1769 and 1773, John Dilley and his wife Catharine left Maryland and migrated into the "Fort Valley " area of present Shanandoah Co, VA. In 1773 John Dilley purchased from Mather and Abigail Plumley, for 50 pounds five shillings, 80 acres of land at Powell's Fort upon Passage Creek.

The area where John settled was within Dunmore Co. Va which was created March 24, 1772 and named after the infamous Lord Dunmore, then colonial Governor of VV. After Lord Dunmore fell from grace, that county was divided into smaller counties and renamed. The land purchased by John Dilley is located in present day Shenandoah County, VA which was established Feb. 1, 1778. His land was east of, and across, Powell's Mountain from Woodstock, VA.

John Dilley and his wife Catharine obtained on May 26, 1779 a grant from Lord Fairfax for 223 acres of land at Powell's Fort which apparently adjoined land they obtained in 1772/3. During the year 1779 John Dilley and his wife Catharine began disposing of their land in Shenandoah Co. They sold 114 acres to John Hughs in 1780, and sold 104 acres to John Lichlither.

It is uncertain where John Dilley, Sr. migrated to after his departure from Shenandoah Co, VA. A John Dilley is shown as a tax payer in Augusta Co, VA during the time span 1782-1787. Augusta County covered a large portion of the East Central US at that time, and included much of what is now present day Pocahontas Co, WV. Thus it might logically be assumed that he moved directly from Senandoah County to the Brown's Mountain Area of what is now Pocahontas County.
