James was born on 21st February 1969. His dad, who was a biker, wanted to call him Clint Eastwood but luckily his mum had more sense. He grew up in Blackwood, South Wales, he attended Oakdale Comprehensive school. He and Sean are cousins and lived together when they were young. James was also in the same year as Nicky at school.James is lead singer with the Manics and plays lead guitar for the band as well, he also plays most of Richey's guitar parts on the records, and he writes all the music with Sean.
