The Pretender is based around a fictitious entity known as the Centre,

located in Blue Cove, Delaware. The Centre was founded by Mr. Parker, and performs a variety of highly secretive activities, among them twin research, psychogentic research, and most importantly, the Pretender project.

In 1963, the Centre isolated a young, Pretender named Jarod. They took him from his parents, and raised him. Jarod grew up in the Centre, under the care of Dr. Sydney Green. But after becoming an adult, he gradually became disenchanted with the Centre, and ultimately escaped the prison he had been raised in.
