Acquired: Selected in the 47th round of the 1995 amateur draft out of high school.

Debut: The starting catcher July 21, 2002 in an 11-9 win against Arizona, he batted eighth and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.

Analysis: Wilbert Nieves had his contract purchased from Portland (AAA) July 20, 2002 when catcher Wiki Gonzalez went on the D.L. Nieves had just one season of 400 or more at-bats coming up through the Padres system, hitting .328 with seven homers at Rancho Cucamonga (high-A) in 1999. The brother of former major league outfielder Melvin Nieves, Wil played all of the 2000 at Mobile (AA), where he hit .300, including .412 against left-handers. The energetic Nieves continued to punish lefties at Portland, hitting .356 against them before his call-up and his seven homers at Portland tied a career high.
