In 1958 rookie Schmidt won the Giants' catching job and a spot on the NL All-Star
team with an early-season batting tear. [See All-Star Catchers.] He finished with 14 HR, led NL catchers in
double plays, and set a since-broken record with 22 putouts in one game. After 1958,
Schmidt was platooned. While playing for the Washington Senators in 1962, Bob led all American League catchers in
Fielding Percentage with a .997 average.
