EYES ON THE PRIZE
New CD-ROM has $1 million incentive

Don't see the point of putting yourself through the mental decathlon necessary to reach the end of games like Myst? Maybe a million dollars would change your lazy mind. The makers of the CD-ROM game Treasure Quest, released this week, is planning to give away that hefty pot of gold to the first person to solve the game's mystery.

But fans of Agatha Christie, Twin Peaks, and "The Simpsons"s "Who Shot Mr. Burns" contest ought to know cyber-treasure-seekers are in for the long haul. Richard Gnant, head of "TQ" company Sirius Publishing, estimates he won't be writing out a check for at least six months, and maybe even up to two years. "It's going to take someone a while," Gnant says, pointing out that the mansion gamers must scour for clues contains a staggering 288 rooms. And clues can be anywhere -- in quotes, word puzzles, phone numbers, even the soundtrack that accompanies the disc. ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" actress Terry Farrell, dressed in assorted cheesy costumes, serves as a guide throughout the game.) Some may require travel, which is why Gnant hopes players will trade insights on the game's Web site (http://www.treasurequest.com). "You'll know you're getting into 'Treasure Quest' when you start dreaming about it," says Gnant.

So will "TQ" "re-generate interest in the medium," as Gnant hopes, or just revisit the lowest common denominator of marketing gimmicks? Though Sirius' claim to fame is repackaging slow-selling CD-ROM titles into cheap ten-packs, Gnant swears its first foray into original content would be a hit even without the big jackpot. Marketing tactics like hawking an "Official Resource Guide" for $19.95 (on top on the game's $50 purchase price), however, seem a little crass, even though the book is not essential to solving the mystery. And after touting the disc's original March release date as a potential clue, Sirius had to push it back to April 10 at 10:07 p.m. -- nevertheless still an important hint, the company said.

The "TQ" concept is loosely based on that of "Masquerade," a book that sent England into a treasure-hunting tizzy 15 years ago by providing clues to the whereabouts of a buried gold rabbit worth $1 million. "Masquerade" sales topped a million copies; Sirius expects to quickly sell out of its first run of 240,000. Gnant professes, however, never to have heard of "Million Dollar Mystery," the 1987 B-movie flop with a similar premise. The future of "TQ," then, will rest on whether gamers find its sea of puzzles pleasantly perplexing or just mad, mad, mad, mad, maddening.

DS9 Star To Walk

Terry Farrell ("Star Trek: Deep Space Nine") confirmed rumors of her departure from 'Deep Space Nine' Monday morning on the Howard Stern Show. Farrell's dissatisfaction stems from the fact that her contract has not been renegotiated since the summertime.

Terry Farrell, Others, Set Sail on (Audio) Titanic"Trek" actress Terry Farrell is among 20 actors (including several from TV)who lend their voices to "The Titanic Disaster Hearings: The Official Transcript of the 1912 Senatorial Investigation," a Dove Audio based on the recently-published Pocket Book. Other actors on the tape include"Bridget Loves Bernie" star David Birney, Susan Anspach, William Windom ("My World And Welcome To It"), Patrick Macnee ("The Avengers"), Roscoe Lee Browne ("The Cowboys"), Harlan Ellison, Richard Cox and more. The book-on-tape will be available in June.

From Ultimate TV's ask Mr. TV section:
(Date appears to be April 26, 1998 but have not been able to confirm that.)

Granted, there are similarities between "Deep Space Nine," and "Babylon5." Both are set on a space station. Both are set in the future. And both have featured lead actresses who decided to bolt "for career reasons"one season before the show came to an end. (Claudia Christian missed out on the jump to TNT, and "Babylon 5" has continued without her Commander Susan Ivanova. Terry Farrell wants out of "Deep Space Nine," and has said she’ll leave at the end of this year. That means no Dax on the all-but-announced seventh and final season of DS9.)

"Deep Space" Finale Season finales are not over either, this week, look for the season finale of"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," which finds Sisko (Avery Brooks) leading an invasion into Dominion territory. The episode also marks the departure of Terry Farrell as Dax. Her character dies in the episode, something that Farrell reportedly isn't too happy with.

There's a New Dax in Town

Now that Terry Farrell has left "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" for CBS'"Becker," which stars Ted ("Cheers") Danson, there's an opening on"DSN." Anew character named Ezri Dax will join the show, and save the Dax Symbiot's life. Paramount doesn't have exact details but did tell UltimateTV that the actress is newcomer Nicole deBoer - so start those house of worship websites now - she's reportedly going to be huge. "DSN" premieres the week of September 28.
