Scott Calvin is a divorced toy maker with a son named Charlie. He learns that Charlie's mom and stepdad have just broken the news to Charlie that Santa isn't real. In the midst of dealing with all this at Christmas, Calvin catches an "intruder" on his roof Christmas Eve. He yells to scare away the vandal, who falls off the roof. Scott realizes that he's put Santa out of comission, Charlie persuades his dad to don the magical red suit and finish the route. However, Scott is bound by the "Santa clause": whoever puts on Santa's suit must become St. Nick permanently!
