Direction's to the annual picnic at Smith Mountain Lake 770 Oakshire

From Roanoke go through Boones Mill and stay on 220S for about 4 mi. Look for an Exon/D.Q./Bojangles complex on left. Make a left there onto S.R. 697 (Jubal Early Highway/ Wirtz Rd.) Take S.R. 697 for 5.1 mi to S.R. 122 (Booker T Washington Highway) and turn left on S.R.122 and go aprox. 1 mi to S.R. 670. Turn right on S.R. 670 (Burnt Chimney Rd.)(before the Shell Station) and go 7.5 mi. on S.R. 670 to S.R. 944 (Craft’s Ford Rd) make a right and go .1 mi to S.R. 1355 (Oakshire) Take a left on Oakshire and go past S.R. 1353 (Boxwood Green) and S.R. 1356 (Morningwood) to the Sheridan’s house on the right at 770 Oakshire.

From Lynchburg take the 460 Bypass around Bedford and turn on 122 toward Burnt Chimney and the lake. Go 20.2 mi to S.R. 616 (Scruggs Rd) and take a left on S.R. 616. Go 1.9 mi and take a right on Gilford Rd and go 1.2 mi and take a right on S.R. 668 (Lovely Valley Rd). Go 1.5 mi and take a left on S.R. 670 (Burnt Chimney Rd.) and go .8 mi to S.R. 944 (Craft’s Ford Rd) make a right and go .1 mi to S.R. 1355 (Oakshire) Take a left on Oakshire and go past S.R. 1353 (Boxwood Green) and S.R. 1356 (Morningwood) to the Sheridan’s house on the right at 770 Oakshire.


When do you usually meet?

The fourth Monday of the month. There are no meetings in December, January, June, July, or August.

When do you normally have field trips during the year?

We have lots of field trips and walks but usually don't have any in July and maybe only a fern walk in August.

What books help to identify flowers and shrubs in the our area?

Where is a good place to obtain plants and seeds native to our area?
Most local places sell only cultivated varieties of wild plants so ask specifically for native plants.
Niche Gardens in North Carolina sells seeds and plants native to the southeast United States.
Barry Glick of Sunshine Farms in Renick W.VA. also sells many native plants.
