Polshill
Thomas Kirkland writing in the 'New Cumnock School-Fellows Annual Magazine' (1898)
recalls a local tradition that 'the Dunbars came doon the brae, and the last of them was a
tenant farmer in Polshill'.

1733: William Dunbar
William Dunbar married Isabel Neil. They lived in Burnton,near Dalrymple and
were said to have been Best Man and Best Maid when Burns' father and mother
were married. William wasborn at Polshill, New Cumnock removing to Burnton,
Dalrymple,then to Guelt, Old Cumnock and later to Blacksidend, Sorn.There
eldest daughter Isobel was said to be a very handsome woman and was saidto be
the heroine of the Burns song "Tibbie Dunbar". There next daughter Margaret
Dunbar married Ivie Campbell of Dalgig, a farmer of renown, and she is buried in
the Auld Kirkyard , New Cumnock.
