It's the spin-off The X-Files was bound to have. But, as is often the way in Australia, it's often on a different network from the mother show. The Lone Gunmen (Seven, Thursday 30 August, 10.30pm) features conspiracy theorists Frohike,Langly and Byers, the magazine publishers who double (triple?) as Mulder's sources on The X-Files. They get their chance to do some investigating of their own when Byers' father is found dead and a secret government agency is implicated. To add some spice to the series , they also have to contend with a character called Yves Adelharlow, described as a "Lara Croft-esque cat burglar and professional rival". Sounds like something strictly for the fans - if they are still out there.

Producers of the popular TV sci-fi drama The X-Files have confirmed a new character, Agent Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish), was very close to having been written as a lesbian. In a cliffhanger finale to the last series, which screened in the US in May, Reyes gushed to Agent Scully (Gillian Anderson), that she looked "amazingly beautiful" whilst Scully struggled to give birth. The comment sparked a lot of buzz among fans that producers John Shiban, Chris Carter, and Frank Spotnitz seriously considered exploring lesbianism as an option for the new character. "I can see where they got the idea [the character was gay]," Shiban told the US TV Week, "but we ultimately decided that it's the kind of baggage that we didn't want to deal with.... we had other ideas that we were more excited about."

Gish feels the whole thing was "harmless," since, "most women look beautiful when they're giving birth, and it was a very authentic birth experience." However Shiban would not rule out the possibility a queer character may pop up on the long-running series. "On The X-Files, anything can happen, so I don't want to discount anything. Life is complicated."

• There was a negative review of The Lone Gunmen series in yesterday's 7 Days section of The Daily Telegraph.
• Steven Williams (X) will be a guest star on next week's episode of Stargate SG1, titled "Tangent", on channel 7 at 8:30pm on Thursday August 30.
  Stargate SG1 often features X-Files actors/guests, including star Don S Davis who was of course Scully's father, William. Willie Garson (Henry Weems in The Goldberg Variation) starred in last night's episode. In other upcoming episodes are Tom McBeath (from 3 and Teso Dos Bichos), Bill Dow (Chuck Burks in multiple episodes) and Hrothgar Matthews (Jersey Devil, Our Town and Talitha Cumi)
• The DVD of The Family Man (Tea Leoni) was released on Wednesday and you can buy it for $34.95 (rrp) or rent it at video libraries.
• The July SFX has now arrived at newsagents and contains Chris Carter and Gillian Anderson articles.
• Woman's Day has the following paragraph in the good gossip section:

  And the word for Romantic of the Year goes to...sweet, seriously cute David Duchovny who, knowing wife Tea Leoni longs to be a singer, rented a recording studio and 10 musicians, gave them a list of the songs she sings in the shower, then sprang the surprise on her.

Even though shooting just began on Season 9, we figured you would have a lot of questions that needed to be answered NOW! So we convinced Creator and Executive Producer Chris Carter to face the fans online in a summer chat. Come bearing questions, as Chris answers them -- live on Thursday, August 23 at 7 PM EST (4 PM PST) (US times). He may not reveal plot twists, but you can bet he'll talk about the latest casting decisions, the baby and how they plan to write a Mulder-less Season 9.

• The latest issue of (US) Premiere magazine has an article on movie special effects, including Evolution.
• As well as the TV Week bit mentioned below, there was also a brief bit about Lucy Lawless joining The X-Files cast in NW accompanied by a photo of her next to Gillian Anderson and Robert Patrick.
• Lucy Lawless joining The X-Files cast was also mentioned in last week's Who Weekly.
• That same issue of Who Weekly also had a photo of Tea Leoni with a quote saying she was scared that one day she would leave her daughetr on the roof of her car and drive off with her still on it!
• There's also a preview of Jurassic Park 3 (starring Tea Leoni) in the August Filmink mentioned below.
• In overseas magazines, Starbust 275 has arrived at newsagents now and contains a 2 page David Duchovny article and also a full page photo of him elsewhere in the magazine. Also one of the 2 photo prints accompanying the magazine has a photo of the cast and producers of The Lone Gumen with Chris Carter.

• This week's Woman's Day has a paragraph each on David Duchovny and Tea Leoni.
• The September Girlfriend has a half page on David Duchovny consisting of a set of 4 questions and answers to him.
• There is a photo of David Duchovny and Tea Leoni with Sam Neill in the August 6 issue of New Zealand Women's Weekly which is available at a few Aussie newsagents.
• There is a photo of David Duchovny in the crossword puzzle section in last week's New Idea on page 72.

• The September issue of UK Dreamwatch has already arrived at selected local newsagencies. The David Duchovny article is 6 pages long.
• Also keep a look out for a couple of issues of the UK magazine OK that have short articles on David Duchovny (July 13) and Gillian Anderson (July 20) accompanied by a photo.

• The September issue of UK magazine Dreamwatch, with a David Duchovny story, will be available at selcted local newsagencies next week (by air freight) while sea freight copies should arrive in around 2 months time.

• NW, in the Hollywood Mums section, has photos of Gillian Anderson and Tea Leoni with their respective daughters Piper and Madelaine West. However these photos are the same that appeared in a recent issue of our In Style magazine. Likewise in the Before They Were Famous section of NW this week there is a photo of David Duchovny that was in an issue of Who Weekly some time ago when they ran a similar article.
• The August Video Ezy Magazine has a review of The Family Man (starring Tea Leoni) due out August 22 and a photo of David Duchovny and Julianne Moore (from Evolution) accompanied by a quote from each.

  After nine years of playing FBI agent Dana Scully in The X-Files, Gillian Anderson is set to exit the show. Already scheduled to star in a production in London's West End, Anderson told London's Sunday Times that she wants to spend more time with her six year old daughter Piper. "After sacrificing the first seven years of my daughter's life," Anderson said, "she has to be the priority.

  Lucy Lawless, known internationally for her character Xena on Xena: Warrior Princess, has signed on for a guest role in The X-Files, appearing in the first two episodes of the show's ninth season, with additional episodes to be determined.
