Hackers
could hack into telephone systems, not just computer systems. Hackers,
such as
, hacked into telephone systems and eavesdropped on people’s
conversations. When such incidents occur, there is a loss of privacy for
the victims. They might not even realise that somebody is eavesdropping
on their conversations until quite sometime later. Kevin Mitnick tried
to gain
into Digital’s computer network by cleverly manipulating the telephony
network to disguise the modem calls. Hence police were unable to locate
his exact locations to arrest him. Due to this, Kevin Mitnick was able
to further break into the computer systems of companies such as, Netcom
Inc., Novell and Suns Microsystems. When police fails to arrest such
hackers fast enough, companies would suffer great losses with the loss
of information. Time is money. The later the police arrests the hackers,
the more time the hackers would have to break into the companies’
computer systems to steal information.
Hacking casts doubts on the reliability of information. This is because
if the Website where the information is has been hacked, the hackers
could have changed parts of the contents of the information to mislead
the users. However, if the users are not aware about the hacking, they
might take the altered information seriously and hence be misled. At
times, malicious hackers could have added in pornographic contents.
These pornographic materials could be a bad influence for immature
users, such as adolescents and teenagers.
