Computer Crime Categories: How Techno-criminals Operate

David L. Carter, Ph.D.

Review

Before I read this article, I did not really know that cybercrimes actually could be categorised into groups. I had thought that as long as criminals use computers for illegal activities, those activities are known as cybercrimes. Without this article, I doubt that I would ever know the differences between crimes committed using computer as the target and computer as the instrumentality of the crime.

It is actually an amazement about how far a criminal can out-paced the law enforcers. It makes me wonder whether are there any differences in the construction of the brains of the law enforcers and the criminals. Are criminals born smarter than law-abiding citizens, that is why they tend to take the wrong paths? Organisations and the governments of countries have the abilities to groom computer professionals however, the outlaws are the one who actually know more and learn more. This reminds me of another Chinese saying," The good is one inch high whereas evil is a yard high." This fact sure brings embarrassments to the authorities.

Everyone has responsibilities in protecting their own safety. If everyone is able to protect each other's properties and stand unite against crimes, I believe that cyber-criminals would not be able to strike easily.
