Essay 2

Some people may want to argue that the reader’s interpretations of the content of the hypertext and its links are unique and independent of the author. This is because the author is absent and hence cannot control or influence how the reader thinks. Let us examine this in another perspective. Take a look at my creative writing and come back to me after you have finished reading the hypertext and links, which I have included in..

Welcome back! What do you think it is that I am trying to express in creative writing? Children? Relationships between people? Friends? I believe that all these were derived into your mind while you read through. I am the author. I am the one who produced the hypertext. I am the one who wants you, the reader, to see the imageries and to derive the meanings out of the hypertext, the way I have planned. I prepared all the materials and information for you to think the way you were thinking during the reading and after the reading. You, as a reader, do not create or produce your own interpretations and ‘mental’ text out of thin air. I have prepared all the necessary information through the links to guide you along the path I have wanted you to take. Even though I am invisible to your eyes, I am still present in every step you take, shaping your ideas and interpretations without you realizing.

Hence the reader does not actually create his or her own texts. The reader "only takes the reins of a creative process that is uniquely the author's but also no longer the author's." (Whiter Leads the Poem of Forking Path, Robert Kendall) The reader merely makes use of the author's tools to create his or her own texts, even though it is based on the author's original intentions.
