The Community Centre is situated in Washington Village in
Washington which is in the North East of England. The Old
Hall in Washington Village was the home of George Washingtons
ancestors.
General George Washington lead armed forces in the War of
Independence and went on to become the first President of
the United States of America. It was Georges great grandfather
John who had emigrated, along with his brother Lawrence, to
America and settled in Virginia in 1656. It was in the state
of Virginia in Fredericksburg that George was born on February
22nd 1732.
The Washington family's coat of arms was commonly known as
"three stars and two stripes" and examples of it can still
be seen today, one example is at Hytlon Castle in Sunderland.
Undoubtedly it was this which was used as a basis for the
Stars and Stripes, Americas national flag, in honor of such
a great man.
Although there are now many town, cities, villages and even
mountains and rivers with the name Washington the original
Washington is that in which we live in the North East of
England.
The Village Community Centre is situated a stones throw from
The Old Hall. It has been open a great number of years and
was previously ran and maintained by the local council. It
is now self-managed under lease by a group of dedicated local
people.
The Community Centre consists of a large hall with stage, an
office, fully licensed bar, store rooms, kitchen and male,
female and disabled toilets. The whole building is on ground
level and so is fully accessible to wheelchair users.
The hall is home to a number of regular groups while are all
detailed on the pages of this site (click on buttons below for
more details). The hall is also available for hire to groups
or individuals(click Hall and Bar Hire button).
The committee hold their meetings on the third Monday of the
month at 7pm in the Community Centre and anyone who would like
to be involved is welcome to come along.
