The travel homeward
continues very quiet but the steamers coming from England keep us more or less
busy, although the few people coming in from the west report conditions in a
chaotic state.
Michigan, although working
at full blast is a very tough state for a beginner at present. The boys have
been out of work so long up there on account of the strike that now they are
working they intend to stick for a couple of years, whereas, if they had been
working steadily there would always have been twenty to thirty quitting each
week making positions for those boys coming in. I would advise boys who are
thinking of coming to America if they have friends in the place they intend
going to write them and find out what the conditions are like first.
The St Louis arrived
Thursday morning after a very pleasant trip. There were about 20 Cornish on her.
We arrived back at the Hotel about 10 o-clock and the “Boys” did not leave
until three in the afternoon. We had several organ players among them, and our
organ. I must say, was in fine order, also most of the voices of the “Boys”.
We had a splendid programme for nearly three hours, as the fellows said “it
was more interesting than going out to see the city. It was splendid especially
when they sang “Lead Kindly light”. And Jesu Lover of my Soul”. Rendered
to the Welsh tune. It has often caused me to wonder why every year two or three
Welsh Choirs come to this country to tour. The Cornish have equally as good
voices yet you never hear of a choir from Cornwall coming to America. The Welsh
must make a success of it, or they would not repeat it every year.
Mr Richard George of
Mullion, who is one of the staff, is still the checker champion of the hotel
having defended the title during the last two weeks at least a dozen times. Best
three in five games. He is getting a little “chesty” so I hope some good
player will come along shortly and take it away from him. The reason I say this
is partly from pique, he having beaten me very badly on three different
occasions.
