Hayle Mail July 31, 1914

Although we have had a very busy week We did not get many people from the old country, the S.S. Olympic only bringing us six or seven from Cornwall. They were all well pleased with the trip across.

On the ships return voyage, however, we have a different tale to tell. It seemed as if the Cornish Boy’s were drifting in from all directions, some coming from Arizona and Butte City, Montana, a number also coming from different cities in Michigan.

On Friday evening they all seemed to be in good singing form, we had all the old tunes sung to us and a lot of America’s latest. We also had the programme repeated on Saturday morning before they left for the boat, about fifty in all.

The S.S. New York arrived Monday Morning July 13th. She left Southampton July 4th and had a good trip up to the last couple of days when they had it a bit rough for one day then she ran into a fog which delayed her a whole day, she having to stay outside the quarantine area all the day Sunday. This goes to show you how careful the American Line is. We only had five Cornishmen from her.

On Saturday evening the New York Cornish Association met here. There was a fair attendance. It was a business meeting and the election of officers for the ensuing year took place. The following were elected:

  Mr W.J. Tyacke – Marazion – President

Mr J Sandry – Helston – Vice President.

Mr F. Annear – Truro – Recording Secretary.

Mr Ed. Segdman – Porthleven – Financial Secretary

Mr T. Dunn – Hayle – Treasurer.

Mr Wm. Williams – Constantine – Sergeant at Arms.
