The Merritt
Parkway
Fairfield County
The Merritt Parkway opened to the public in 1938 as Connecticut's and New England's first limited access passenger car parkway. It is the result of the Fairfield County Planning Association, representing twenty-two towns, request for a highspeed "boulevard" connecting, Connecticut with New York City. It was approved by the State Legislature in 1931, to serve towns not well connected by raillines. (Janick. p8: Fall 1993) |
