Touma says: "He may have been the youngest of the Masho, but Toshitada Koma made up for it by being the most powerful. In his first battle, he took on and held his own against all five Samurai Troopers at once, something no other Masho even tried to do! His ego was huge, and the only thing worse than the way he'd keep going on about how he was unbeatable was the fact that he was right. Every time we thought Shutendoji was finally down for good, he'd come back; as powerful as ever and twice as mad! He was the unofficial leader of the Masho, although all three of his comrades hated him - Naaza especially. With the aid of Kauso, Toshitada became the first of the Masho to see the light and turn against Arago, renouncing his yoroi and joining us in the battle for Mankind! As it happens, Toshitada was actually a very honourable and sensitive soul, but had been twisted by Arago's evil mind control. With his true personality restored, the former Oni Masho eagerly turned his skills to our side, and battled against his former partners. Following in the shoes of his ancestor, he took up the robes and shakujo staff of a warrior-monk, and was one of the Samurai Troopers' staunchest allies before fate and destiny forced him to become The Ogre one final time..."

Shutendoji's armour was bonded to the spirt of an Oni, a kind of demon or evil spirit. While working for Arago, his yoroi drew its power from the cruel, dark thoughts of others, as well as absorbing the energy from our attacks. Shuten was perhaps the strongest of all the Masho, physically as well as mystically, and easily the most tenacious. With his kusari-gama, a sickle weapon with a weight connected to it by a length of chain, he was all but unstoppable! After reforming, he used the magical shakujo staff of Kauso, which seemed able to disrupt or overpower almost any of Arago's dark magicks, and was even capable of halting an attack from the Kikouten itself!

Shutendoji was the representation not just of cruel thoughts and evil spirits, but also the season of spring.

Shuten's japanese voice actor, or seiyuu, was Kiyoyuki Yanada. Yanada is also known for his roles in other popular anime, such as Leon McNichol in Bubble Gum Crisis - Tokyo 2040, Gateau Mocha in Sorceror Hunters, Rilld in Dragon Ball GT, Jeo in Magic Knight Rayearth, Takenoko Akagi in Slam Dunk, Kaoru Misaki in Moldiver, Chareux Zabine in Gundam F-91, Iwashizimu in Dirty Pair Flash, and Richter Belmont in the game Dracula X. He also provides the japanese voices for Depth Charge in Transformers: Beast Wars and Shredder in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

In the Ronin Warriors dub, "Anubis" is voiced by Paul Dobson.
