Guards Wargames Club at Sheldon

Wargaming market garden in 25mm. It helps if you're a little mad but then most wargamers i've met are. At least it keeps us off the streets.
25mm is more visually pleasing than smaller scales for shows and conventions but with that comes problems producing the environment to accompany the figures and vehicles for the scale.
the Buildings are scratch built and the trees, telegraph poles, streetlamps and the like from Railway modelling shops. likewise the use of embossed plastic card to face the structures again from local railway shops.
then it's just a lot of measuring, painting, glueing and carrying to put a game on. At Britcon 2003 this year I chose Oosterbeek and 1st airlanding Brigades' advance on Arnhem.

Modelling the town centre and the Hospital as closely as possible. the following pictures are from the show.
we didn't win unfortunately. The best display went to 'Border Warlords' and 'the battle of the Five Armies'
from the Lord of the Rings. nice layout, with a hollow mountain!

Foot in mouth (almost)

As always in shows it's a club policy to explain and inform anyone who asks about the display.
So i'm about to elaborate about my knowledge of 'Market Garden
and the Battles and personalities to a White haired chap
with a military tie
before i can embarass myself, he produces a card from his wallet.

The Glider Pilot Association
After some conversation, this gentleman, Former Staff sergeant
John Smith (yes, that's his real name)
says modestly "I was on market Garden but not in it".
It transpires he flew a glider into the Nijmegen sector
with General Brownings staff HQ.
I wish I had taken a photo of him along with these below.
Anyone who took part in that operation deserves all our
thanks and respect for what they did.
