Sonic and Knuckles (1994)
(Now Playing: Game Ending Theme from "The Sonic and Knuckles Compilation" for PC.)
Another "incomplete" game according to many fans, Sonic and Knuckles may be better when it's attached to Sonic 3 (and vice-versa), but it's still a dang good game on its own. The first--and so far, ONLY--cartridge to use the revolutionary idea of "lock-on" technology, this game continues Sonic's adventures on the Floating Island from where he left off at the end of Sonic 3. After chasing the good Doctor off at the Launch Base Zone, Sonic follows his trail DEEP into the Island, starting with the Mushroom Hill swamp. From here on in, the dangers just keep getting deadlier and the Island's Guardian, Knuckles, just keeps getting angrier, until the big confrontation in the Hidden Palace. This marks the first Sonic Genesis game to have a really strong plotline, as far as I know, anyway, and even though it came out in the same year as its counterpart, Sonic 3, the graphics were ALREADY quite noticeably better!
The music kicks tail, too, in many cases. Most people's favourite is the Lava Reef Act Two/Hidden Palace theme; I favour Sandopolis, especially Act Two. But to each his/her/its own. At any rate, it's one heck of a great game.
Notes: One of the people who wrote the music for Sonic and Knuckles is Jun Senoue, who also wrote the music for the Genesis version of Sonic 3D Blast AND wrote and also PERFORMED the music for Sonic Adventure! Guy gets around...
Also of note: This game is part of the "Sonic and Knuckles Compilation" for the PC, but as far as I know, the music was unchanged in the computer version.

music-loving Mobians and Floating Islanders
have been here since November 14, 1999. Of course, they all decompressed in the vacuum of the Doomsday Zone, but hey...
