Executive Order No. 9066
LESSON TWO: EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 9066

OBJECTIVE:
 - To read/learn the exact wording of Executive Order No. 9066, have the class give possibilities why
   this order was created, and break down the meaning of the wordings.

INITIATION:
 - See if anyone was able to contact an older adult about memories during the time of Pearl Harbor
   and discuss their findings.

 - Have the date: February 19, 1942 up on the board.

 - Ask the class try to and guess what the significance of the date is. (No one will probably know.)

TEACHER INPUT:
 - Explain that the date signifies the signing of Executive Order No. 9066 by President Franklin D. 
   Roosevelt, which gave it authorization. 

 - Pass out copies of the wording of Executive Order No. 9066.

 - Read out loud the actual wording of the document.

 - Ask the class to respond to and explain how they interpret the document to mean.

 - Explain to the class that the doucment meant that 110,000 Japanese/or people of Japanese lineage
   who lived on the West Coast were sent to internment camps and that 70% of them were American
   citizens.

WHOLE CLASS ACTIVITIES:
 - Pass out the copies of the actual wording of Change of Residence Notices.

 - Read the notices out loud.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY:
 - Ask the class to write down what images come to mind when they hear the phrase enemy alien.
   (Explain that you do not mean space alien when you say enemy alien.)

GROUP ACTIVITIES:
 - Have the class divide in small groups and discuss what images come to their minds.

MONITORING & ADJUSTMENT:
 - Pass out pictures of some of the enemy aliens that were sent to the
   internment camps.

 - Have the class discuss how their imagined descriptions fit with the actual pictures.

 - Have them continue to discuss in their small groups how the provided pictures make them feel and
   what their initial reactions are.

CLOSURE:
 - Ask the class what they learned today.  Did any of their opinions or intial reactions change
   during the course of the class.

HOMEWORK:
 - Ask the class to write in their journals whether they felt that the American government's 
   course of action was right.  Do they agree or disagree? Why?
