Every story has a beginning, and this one begins on a very beautiful world worth knowing about.... Not many who live know of her. Beyond the dusky, dusty reaches of known space, past the mystical clouds of colored nebulae... Indeed, on the other side of the fathomable universe, there is a parallel one that people have only ever guessed at. It is as Einstein said.... Like the earth had stepped to the edge, only to find itself looking right back at it.... Earth's twin planet. Evaland. A small blue and green pinprick in the dark fabric of space and time. From her formation, billions, perhaps trillions or quadrillions of years ago, her natural history has been and altogether fascinating one. However, that is not what I here tell about. The far more interesting aspects of Evaland can be found in more recent millenia. The beings that have developed, the lush plant life that has grown to envelope the planet: these things are the most captivating of Evaland's many secrets... It is said that the first inhabitants of Evaland were giant winged men who roamed the fruited paradise. It is told in the old stories that they were cast down after they had fallen in love with their goddess for her beauty, and were then stripped of their wings and shrunken as punishment, and as a show of their fall from grace. The goddess did, however, pity them of their lot and created female creatures of the evaland in her likeness. A blessed race descended of these creatures and lived up in the mountains of Evaland, close to their beloved goddess. Thus there were three races that developed over time on Evaland's various continental land masses. The Blessed of the Mountains, known as the "Learliana" (Blessed of the Goddess) or the "Morinand," were tall, pale creatures of great beauty and magic. Then there were men-like creatures, known as "Cormorins" (Common Ones), who occupied nearly all of Evaland for a good, long while until the conflicts towards the Middle Ages, when they nearly became an extinct people. The last was a race that descended from the Cave Dwellers of Evaland. These were a fearsome kind. They were always hunters by nature, and did not have to eat their meat cooked. Their descendents are the "Korman'shi" ("Blood-drinkers"), fanged blood-drinkers. They were the most feared of all things on Evaland... Though theirs was the smallest race in numbers during the First Age. Evaland is covered mostly by oceans. There are three of them, and they all are of salt water. There are only two continents. One, the largest, stretches across the middle of Evaland and into her southern hemisphere. It is called The Southern Continent, or "Corminlan." The coasts are open and there are long, pale beaches. Most of its interior are lush forests and there are some small mountains. All kinds of life thrive here, and it is the lands of the Cormorin. There are rather large four-legged and herbivorous reptiles called "Ergumi", and which could be tamed by the Cormorins. Beautifully graceful Qu'erna roamed these forests. These animals are much like albino deer, only larger, and all have large horns that protrude from their heads. They were the main foodstay for the Cormorins. Many species of insects also thrived on this continent, along with small rodents, reptiles, and birds. The northern, and smaller of the two continents, is connected to the southern one by means of a tiny land bridge that is not always above the sea. The northern continent is a colder, more barren place. For many, many years only the Cave Dwellers and the Morinand lived there. They lived isolated from each other. The soil of the northern continent had always been rocky and the northern-most regions and the ones to the west were full of mountains. Large land mammals lived on the rocky, rolling plains and ate the sparse grassy vegetation. These animals, large beasts similar to hairy horses, were called the "Morsga'shi" by the Cave Dwellers who hunted them for their meat. There were few birds, two to be precise: the "Norichi" great vulture-like birds, and the "Styg'na" horned falcons. They preyed on the rodents that lived beneath the surface of the plains. These rodents, "Huyana'hi" had long noses, wide clawed paws, and prickly fur. Their ears were large and round. There were also snakes, animals unknown to the inhabitants of Corminlan to the south until the First Age. In the mountains, there were another type of Morsga'shi. These ones were white to blend with the snow, and of smaller stock. They were called "Semun'shi" by the Cave Dwellers. But, they were also known to the Morinand, who tamed them, and were named "Ilomai" in their tongue. It was towards the end of the Dark Times that the bridge to the Northern Continent first showed itself. Evaland, as a planet, had begun to warm during the Dark Times. It was in the Third Epoch that the Cormorin people developed a way to write. By the Fifth Epoch, this writing method had been perfected. Before all of this the Cormorin, or their ancestors rather, had been nomadic tribesmen herding the Ergumi and the Qu'erna. They'd lived very good lifestyles. Somewhere along the way, these people decided to settle down. They began taming trees and wild plants, and a diverse agricultural society took shape. As years wore on, the technology of the peoples of Evaland evolved and became more advanced. They would go through periods of warfare and strife before they could learn to live together fully accepting of one another, and in peace... | ||||
