Over
340 islands, more than 14 waterfalls,
numerous rapids and rivers, limestone caves ... a vision of dead
trees protruding from its placid grey-green waters ... tall and
majestic hills as far as the eyes can see, lush and exotic
tropical rain forest ...
This is the stunning panorama of Lake Kenyir, strange and hauntingly
beautiful ... the largest man-made lake in South East Asia. Holding
approximately 23.6 million cubic metres of water and covering
an area of 38,000 hectares, the lake, through the Sultan Mahmud
Hydro Electric Power Plant was formed in 1985. When the main dam
and saddle dams were built, rivers were blocked thus forming a
huge man-made lake. Highlands and hilltops which were not submerged
have become islands of their own.
Lake Kenyir is located in the interior of the State of Terengganu.
Sharing its border with the states of Kelantan in the west and
Pahang to the south, it also serves as an another gateway to Malaysia's
National Park.
Visitors will be awed by the lake's sweeping landscape of scenic
and natural grandeur. It's tranquility and peaceful serenity make
Lake Kenyir the perfect getaway from the breakneck pace of city
life. Within its vast boundaries, are endless hideaways to escape
to and a wealth of things to see, experience and discover. For
those who have been there, called it anglers' haven and
some praised it as Nature's Paradise ... and some wish
they have more time in their hands ... so powerful is the enchanting
beauty of Kenyir.
Aside from it's own natural beauty, Lake Kenyir is also an important
habitat for plants and wildlife. Fishes such as Kelah, Toman,
Baung roam freely in its unpolluted water and exotic wild species
of orchids and other types of flora should forever arouse interest
and invite discovery to the visitors.
Accommodation are available at almost all strategic scenic points
of the lake, from floating chalets to comfortable guesthouses
on islands' hilltops. Outdoor activities and recreational watersport
facilities are also provided to make your stay at Lake Kenyir
a fun-filled and memorable one. |
