In The Secret of Monkey Island you play keen wanabee pirate, Guybrush Threepwood, who washes up on Mêlée Island looking to become a fearsome, grog swilling, sword-slinging pirate. After talking with the three pirate leaders at the SCUMM bar, he finds out that he has to pass the three trials that everyone must overcome if they want to join their piratey ranks; sword fighting, treasure hunting and thievery. This is how he crosses paths with the love of his life, Governor Elaine Marley. But the Mêlée Island inhabitants are not all beautiful, political leaders and Guybrush also makes an enemy, sheriff Fester Shinetop, who's always out to get him AND on top of that, the evil ghost pirate LeChuck scares everyone away and kidnaps the governor. Its up to Guybrush to find a seaworthy ship, a crew and sail to Monkey Island to rescue Elaine and defeat LeChuck.
