Emma had to work very hard to make ends meet, as Norman was an alcoholic and compulsive gambler, his drinking and gambling eating into the profits. He was always in debt to someone, and although Box Hill was a dry suburb, he knew where all the “sly grog” shops were.
On the night of 9th July 1947, Emma woke her eldest son Gordon to come with her to help find his father. They walked down Miller Street and into Bank Street, as they turned the corner they saw a man lying in the gutter. It was Norman. He had stumbled and fallen into the gutter. When they knelt to help him up, Emma realised he was dead.
This meant that Emma would have to bring up her family and run the business on her own. For many years she worked six days a week, starting at 3-30 am and finishing after 6 pm.
Emma never had much of a social life, but one good friend Joe Vial, who was the proprietor of the Criterion Bakery (the opposition), would come around every Friday night to do any jobs that needed doing around the house.
