I was honoured to assist Abrams at filling in the gaps for the missing dates within the year-long Bizarre Holidays online set. Topps asked that I concentrate on using as many of the older characters as possible, and locate a suitable candidate for ninety-six positions. Due to the growing concern of social tensions in recet years, several characters were switched out until okayed by a 'sensitivity specialist', so research was really dragged out at times. Topps would then contact the artist for a hi-res image if at all possible, and then information to Abrams. I also supplied the card and artist information, plus edited the full calendar once completed. I chose the OS1 character for February 7th to celebrate E-Day, the mathematical constant e (of 2.7182818)... not for the equation (E = mc2) on the chalkboard, but because the character is a braniac and the card number (27a/27b) is the same sequence of the constant and the date (2/7). I picked the ANS5 character for March 3rd, because I knew Topps had the evening night sky changed to a blue daytime atmosphere, I knew if Pound supplied the hi-res image, we would finally see the original final artwork printed (albeit, not on card). Barrucci in 2004 at Mount Laurel, New Jersey. It is best known as the owners of
The Boys franchise across several IP medias. Dynamite primarily publishes adaptations
of franchises from other media. These include licensed adaptations of film properties
such as Army of Darkness, Terminator, and RoboCop, and licensed or public domain
literary properties such as Zorro, Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, Alice in Wonderland,
Red Sonja, Tarzan (as Lord of the Jungle) and John Carter of Mars (as Warlord
of Mars). It also publishes superhero books such as Project Superpowers. Per press release Cloudco/Madballs in 2020 & 2022: "This July, Dynamite Entertainment will be releasing four comic issues that take fans all the way back to the first time Madballs and GPK meet as neighbors, and through their neighborhood spats, to simultaneous family reunions that could spark the final meltdown of the Madball vs. GPK feud or be the bridge they need to live creepily ever after." Dynamite Ent. will also be releasing three GPK ORIGINS-story comics by Jeff Zapata (development, artwork, cover artwork), with story by Adam Goldberg, main cover artwork by artist Tom Bunk, and inking by Chris Meeks. Per Instagram, on January 9, 2022, artist Jeff Zapata showed a sneak peak of his Origins #1 comic cover that had the image cropped right below the title, with no comment. It matched his style of GPK characters in superhero-like stances, so fell right into place along with his other postings. 
GARBAGE PAIL KIDS: ORIGINS COMIC Although Dynamite Comics was not physically present at a booth for SDCC 2022, a press release announcing Garbage Pail Kids: Origins was released on July 19, 2022: The iconic Garbage Pail Kids go back nearly 40 years and have been a beloved, colorful cast of characters for trading card collectors and other media including comic books. Each GPK stands out with some kind of gross, horrific, or downright bizarre appearance, abilities, or situation. But in all those years, the backstories on how these kids became who they are has never been disclosed to the fans. Until now… The insane minds of Adam F. Goldberg, Hans Rodionoff, and Jeff Zapata have joined forces to bring everyone the Garbage Pail Kids as they’ve never seen them before, flipping the table with a barrage of huge revelations. Chronicled in the style of a sprawling superhero epic, not only will the curtain be drawn back on the origins of these unique “heroes,” but there’s one crazy surprise at the crux of this story. GARBAGE PAIL KIDS: ORIGINS #2 — UNRELEASED COVER 'B' — PINGITORE ORIGINAL ARTWORK & 'ACTION COMICS' BACKGROUND The project leader, Jeff Zapata, had artist Mark Pingitore, previously known for his GPK artwork and now for his (Magic Marker Art) CPK parody solo artwork, create a cover for the GPK Origins #2 comic installment. Unfortunately, the cover was eventually rejected by the Topps Company/Fanatics since Pingitore is not considered an "authorized Topps artist"; perhaps they saw it as a potential conflict of interest? It's a shame, this is very reminiscent of the covers that Pingitore completed for the GPK IDW Comics of yesteryears. Dynamite Comics mistakenly posted the alternate comic cover 'B' to their website in September 2022 as 'BPingatore'. Either Zapata created a new painting for the project (Cover B), or had artist Bekki Sharp create a replacement piece (Cover C), with layout by Zapata. Some rappers' propensity for piling it on à la Mr. T might make it not appear so, but unique design and quality shine through even when bling is worn in massive amounts. There's no Jedi mind trick behind the success of Han Cholo, an L.A.-born-and-bred jewelry house whose work can be seen in many a music video. Snoop Dogg has donned Cholo's Star Wars–inspired rings on every finger, while Gwen Stefani has rocked singular classics, including a ghetto-blaster ring and belt buckle. Brandon Schoolhouse, the designer behind the company he runs along with partner Guillaume Pajolec, never had a formal line in mind when he got into the accessories game back in 2002. “I was basically making custom jewelry for my wardrobe-styling jobs for clients,” he says. “And I would make jewelry just for myself.” No model can make a product cooler than the designer can by wearing it himself, and soon Schoolhouse had a bona fide biz on his hands. He opened the Han Cholo store, first as a sort of pop-up shop inside his pal Broke Dulien's successful White Trash Charms boutique in Los Feliz, then in Echo Park, on the tiny retail stretch on Echo Park Boulevard, which currently includes Tavin vintage store and Chango café. At the time, Echo Park wasn't nearly the hipster vortex it is today, and in many ways Cholo put that particular block on the map. Schoolhouse and the neighboring shops threw monthly block parties with art shows and live music until he closed his retail space a few years ago. Speaking of “the hood,” cholo — which refers to a certain type of Mexican gang member — is more than just a name. Schoolhouse's L.A.-tino culture plays a big part in the line's aesthetic, as do skater style and music. Like the Beastie Boys, for whom Schoolhouse worked when they had their Grand Royal music label, the street style and hip-hop-meets-punk-rock attitude is a big part of the brand. HC's accessories have a pop culture–damaged edge, from brass knuckles, nunchucks and 40-ounce bottle pendants to rock & roll staples like skulls and spikes on everything from earrings to belts. “I'm heavily influenced by music, science fiction and old Hollywood movies I grew up on,” Schoolhouse says. “But I've never wanted to be one kind of stereotypical jewelry line, and I never wanted to paint myself into a corner. My imagination runs a little wild.” Indeed, the pop culture references go from wild to whimsical and back again: unicorn necklaces, pyramid rings, charms based on the video game Space Invaders, all in silver or gold, some with gem embellishment. PRODUCTION AB APPAREL + PRODUCTS Per website: Hybris is the company behind The Shirtstore, founded in 1998 as an advertising company. 2002, we began to gradually print some clothes for artists, customers and friends. People who carried "our" clothes are often asked where to buy them and after a while we came up with the idea for an online store. Our first webshop was launched in 2003 and the store was called Poohwear.se. It was not long before interest was high and after a year was what was intended as a pet project a full time job for three people. 2005 we changed name to our present name Shirtstore. Since then all the focus is on improving customer service, product development and develop our site. 2009, we launched Shirtstore in Denmark and 2010 in Norway and Finland. Today we are one of Scandinavia's most visited and popular clothing store. Shirtstore is owned by Hybris Production AB. Although the license agreement with Hybris Production AB went into effect in late 2021, early 2022, product would not surface until late Agust 2022. The first wave contained various altered card artwork found on t-shirt, longsleeve, baseball t-shirt, hats and hoodie, for both their menswear and womanswear lines, including Big & Tall sizes. Likely the most crucial moment to readers of Game Informer was the debut of the Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES pulled the burgeoning industry out of the “video game crash” and introduced countless iconic characters and franchises. It seemed like every hit property received a game at the time. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Top Gun, DuckTales, Dungeons & Dragons, American Gladiators: the list goes on and on. However, one iconic brand shockingly never made the transition into a NES game. Garbage Pail Kids, which also debuted in 1985, was a trading card series that mixed the cuteness of the hit Cabbage Patch Kids dolls with outrageous, funny, and compelling grossness. The images featured kids barfing, losing limbs, and getting zapped by lightning, to name a few. Word of mouth spread on playgrounds like wildfire, and teachers and parents were quick to ban and condemn them. Naturally, this made GPK wildly popular. The cards were such a hit that creator Topps produced 15 series in the span of three years. They licensed GPK out for toys, school notebooks and folders, inflatable punching bags, you name it. This kind of white-hot success would normally lead to an NES game as the logical next step, but several factors would get in the way. A universally reviled live-action movie disappointed the kids who were allowed to see it. A threatened boycott got CBS to shelve a GPK Saturday morning cartoon that it had already fully produced. Most damaging of all, Topps had to settle with the makers of Cabbage Patch Kids for millions of dollars plus royalties and alter the design of GPK to be less like CPK’s dolls. Sales dwindled, and GPK was officially dead by the end of 1988.After a long hiatus, Topps launched GPK’s “All New Series” in 2003 (new GPK series continue to this day) during the era of PlayStation 2. The opportunity to create a GPK game on the classic NES console that shared its cultural heyday was seemingly lost forever. 
 PLAYABLE CHARACTERS: Mad Mike — The titular character, Mike uses a sword and axe for melee attacks LUKE PUKE — He’s gonna puke! Luke’s downward-firing barf takes care of enemies on lower platforms LEAKY LINDSAY — Lindsay’s horizontal snot rockets provide much-needed ranged attacks PATTY PUTTY — Think of her as the Luigi of the group. Higher jumps and head stomps play more like a Mario Bros. game LIFTING THE LID Tim Hartman and Greg Caldwell have been best friends since the third grade. They connected over a shared love of NES games, Garbage Pail Kids, and many other ’80s cultural touchstones. In their adult lives, they found themselves longing for an era of game that just wasn’t made anymore. They found a homebrew community where people were making new NES games in the same style and limitations of the original hardware. It wasn’t long before they wanted in. But they had to do it right. “For us, the cartridge comes first,” Caldwell says. “This is where we got our start in game dev. We had never made a game before we made an NES game. That's always been paramount for us.” The friends pulled together a small team under the name Retrotainment to create Haunted: Halloween ’85, a spooky action platformer, and worked with Infinite NES Lives to produce custom NES cart shells, boards, boxes, and manuals. The 2015 release was followed in the subsequent year by Haunted: Halloween ’86. (Both games were later released on digital platforms to reach a wider audience.) While showing the games off at retro conventions, they caught the eye of art, music, and gaming collectible producers iam8bit. Retrotainment and Infinite NES Lives would go on to manufacture several NES, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis cart reissues for iam8bit, including classics like Street Fighter II, Mega Man 2, and Disney’s Aladdin. As they were working on all of these retro releases, they started thinking of all their favorite childhood things that never got the NES treatment. At the top of the list was Garbage Pail Kids. “We were trying to right a wrong,” Hartman says. “It's the game that [GPK has] long deserved to have.” Hartman managed to work his way through contacts at licensor Topps and eventually convinced the executives to give them a shot. Retrotainment brought this up with partners iam8bit, which recently announced it was getting into game publishing. The company was immediately onboard. “When Garbage Pail Kids came up in conversation, it felt so great to all of us,” says iam8bit co-owner Jon Gibson. “[It was like] yeah, why wasn't there a game?” ADAM F. GOLDBERG BRINGS THE STAR POWER The creator of hit show The Goldbergs, Adam F. Goldberg, is a huge Garbage Pail Kids fan. He produced the documentary 30 Years of Garbage: The Garbage Pail Kids Story, wrote the short film Garbage Pail Kids in Mad Mike: Fury Load, and worked on the story for Mad Mike and the Quest for Stale Gum with the game creators. • How did you get involved in Mad Mike: Fury Load? My longtime dream has always been to create a GPK animated series, but my TV company is, unfortunately, at ABC, which prohibits me from working outside of Disney. However, I am allowed to write short films. Joe Simko’s brilliant Garbage Pail Krashers vehicles were the perfect inspiration for me to create a Mad Max parody. • What interested you in contributing to this game? I grew up loving two things above all else – my GPK collection and my Nintendo. Back then, there were rumors that GPK was going to be an NES game, Saturday morning cartoon, and a movie. The Nintendo game never came to be. It blows my mind that after 35 years, we will finally get the 8-bit GPK adventure we were promised! • How was working with Retrotainment and iam8bit? I had a blast collaborating with Retrotainment and iam8bit at the early writing stages. They truly did a brilliant job using Mad Mike: Fury Load as the framework for the game – but made it more epic than I ever expected. It’s a bucket list item for my name to scroll at the end credits 8-bit style!  GARBAGE PAIL GAMEPLAY Garbage Pail Kids: Mad Mike and the Quest for Stale Gum begins directly after the events of GPK Mad Mike: Fury Load, a series of shorts written by Adam F. Goldberg (see sidebar above) set in a post-apocalyptic world. The titular character saved the day, and now all he wants is his favorite stale gum. Unfortunately, the factory run by Brainy Janie only makes fresh gum, so he’ll have to travel through time and space with his three friends on a high-tech toilet to collect the ingredients to make it properly stale. Mad Mike and his friends all have different abilities (see sidebar above), and players can hot-swap between them to take advantage of their skills. The game’s six different levels feature adventures in the Stone Age, ’80s Tokyo, a future Mars colony, and more, and can be completed in any order. Every enemy, boss, and NPC in the game is based on a real GPK card, all of which you can view in the bonus gallery in high resolution. Card collecting and trading is a key component, as some have powers like stunning enemies or granting temporary flight. If you track down all 39, you get a special surprise. Minigames include fishing for items out of a porta-potty and flying around dangerous obstacles as Buggy Betty. The GPK's irreverent, gross-out attitude runs through every element of the game. Multiple difficulty options help players overcome the “NES hard” gameplay, and retro collection masters Digital Eclipse is on board to provide its signature rewind, save states, watch mode, video filter effects, bonus gallery content, and much more in the digital download versions of the game. Licensed Topps Garbage Pail Kids Product The company is known for their various vinyl and action figures sold in blind boxes and regular packaging. Per Entertainment Earth, "Born in 2009, The Loyal Subjects is one of the market leaders in art driven collectibles ranging from vinyl toys, fiberglass multiples, prints to apparel, infaltables, and housewares. The company's licenses include Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and more."
