RELEASE
PERIOD : DECEMBER 1987 PRODUCT NUMBER : 490-11 The two production runs of the 11th Series Garbage Pail Kidsaka Original Series 11 GPK, or OS11 for shortare the same except for their wrappers and a few minor variations caused by printing errors that are found in both production runs. The first production run wrapper has the '25¢ CHEAP' logo and the second production run wrapper has no price. This is the first set to inlude the 'FLICK IT!' section on the back of non-puzzle back cards completed by artist Richard Mcguire. With the GPK brand in its final year, from 1987-1988, and the popularity slowing down, the product is harder to locate, raising the price per pack at certain retailers, and increasing the demand for these cards by collectors years later. ARTISTS : JOHN POUND, TOM BUNK, JAMES WARHOLA, JAMES BENNETT, JAY LYNCH & RICHARD MCGUIRE WRITERS : JAY LYNCH 84 CARD SET : 84 CARDS + 0 VARIATIONS 90 TOTAL CARD SET : 84 CARDS + 2 'CHANGES' + 4 ERRORS CHANGES : 2 CHECKLISTS + 4 ERRORS The New Product Development team had artist James Bennett tested out on the card fronts, to paint alongside full-time artists John Pound, Tom Bunk, and James Warhola for the set; Bennett would go on to paint additional artwork for OS12. The NPD team would also bring artist Richard McGuire on board to create the 'FLICK IT!' section for the card backs for OS11 through OS16 sets. This would be the only GPK release where the uncut sheet format was changed from a more archaic Topps set layout of 88 x 176 (8 columns x 11 rows) for the first production run to the regular 132 x 264 sheet (11 columns x 12 rows) for the second production run. |

The third and last Original Series Garbage Pail
Kids set with no reverse card back Variations. The only Garbage Pail Kids release with twin cards containing different colored Nameplates; the first twin card having a red nameplate and the second twin card having a yellow nameplate for cards 448a Touch TONI and 448b Phoney JONI, along with cards 451a Destroyed LLOYD and 451b Tinsel TIM. The Garbage Pail Kids set has two cards with the same Forename for cards 440a BERT Squirt and 449a BERT Food. The third GPK set found with production Printing Errors during the second print run for twin cards 458a Dental Hy GENE, with a green bar & card 458b RUDY Canal, with a green bar, along with twin cards 459a VomiTED, with an orange mark & yellow blotch, and card 459b Juicy JULES, with a yellow blotch only. NOTE: different variations exist, the images pictured are only samples. The only Garbage Pail Kids set to have a Checklist that can be located with a dark yellow background and a OS1 pink GPK title due to the color saturation. A regular, light yellow checklist can also be found for both print runs for cards 459a VomiTED and 459b Juicy JULES. The fourth set to have a card showcasing GPK Characters from previous releases. The card images for 441a Loose LEIF and 441b Composition BOOKER pay tribute to several OS9 card images whose stickers are stuck to the loose leaf binder; 349a Polluted PERCY and 349b Barnacle BILL, 368a NAT Splat and 368b Jugglin' JUD, and 354a CLARK Shark and 354b MANNY Eater. The seventh Garbage Pail Kids set to contain cards with the GPK Acronym found within the artwork; the GPK acronym found on the baseball cap of the character in cards 437a Sliced BRAD and 437b Dead LEE and etched into the desktop of cards 441a Loose LEIF and 441b Composition BOOKER located above the hand. The Completed Puzzles for the OS11 set are alphabetically sequential with the OS10 set which contained the K-puzzle and L-puzzle. The puzzles have been reduced to 16 pieces and the set has two puzzles much like the OS2, OS3, OS5, OS9 and OS10 sets for card characters 458a Dental Hy GENE & 458b RUDY Canal for the M-puzzle and 459a VomiTED & 459b Juicy JULES for the N-puzzle. The only Garbage Pail Kids set with completed Puzzles containing only 16 pieces.
The fourth GPK set to have the PEEL
HERE arrow pointing higher up compared
to the previous 'PEEL HERE' arrows for OS1 through OS9. Beginning with the OS10
set, and also with OS11, the remaining Garbage Pail Kids releases for OS12 through
the unpublished OS16 sets will also have this new arrow position. The second Garbage Pail Kids set that has a set of twin cards with no PEEL HERE arrows for cards 440a BERT Squirt and 440b FRITZIE Zits. The Garbage Pail Kids set has the light-blue Nameplate but not the light-pink nameplate for this release. The OS11 Garbage Pail Kids set contains the longest Original Series Nomenclature for card 428b Garbage Mouth GILBERT, which is nineteen characters in length. |
Pictured below are two of Tom
Bunk's early GPK Color Roughs that were
finished in 1987 with the character for cards 427a Ripped FLETCH and
427b Taped TATE where the shirt color has been changed, the diaper
replaced for pants, the background color changed and the tape dispenser
design switched along with the character for cards 434a HOLLY Daze
and 434b Joyous NOEL where the image is mirror-flipped, the stocking
colors changed and the clothing color changed. More information on
Bunk can be located within the Artwork Gallery page further above. * According to James Warhola's Case Study in dinosuars for cards 425a DENNY Saur and 425b RIP Tile a thumbnail sketch shows the Kid and a note by Warhola that the urine should be 'very green pee'. James would oftentimes meet up with Art Spiegelman, who also lived in New York, to go over concepts in person over food and drink. The character in the boat scenerio, riding the wave of pee, stayed in the scene from start to finish. Spiegelman questioned whether the urine should be green or blue; as the color rough demonstrates, the color blue was chosen and the dinasuar was initially the color green. Spiegelman also noted that one of the buildings should look like a fire hydrant (a canine gag) and the building does take this form for the final artwork. In the end, the dinasuar Kid became a brown and flesh-colored 'reptile' where the tail is not in view and the character's face became cheerful. More information on Warhola can be located within the Artwork Gallery page further above. * * Pictured below is a John Pound Color Rough and sample for cards 419a MEG-A-Volt and 419b Charged MARGE. Since very few unrevised thumbnail sketches by Pound have been available to the public there are very few changes, if any, that can be found between the tight pencil, color rough and final artwork since they are photocopied and colored and painted over. Also pictured below is the Pencil Art for cards 458a Dental Hy GENE and 458b RUDY Canal; since John Pound uses a scan from the pencil artwork to create the later color rough and final artwork, the pencil art can be seen with the title of the character backwards, and the artwork reversed before the revision. The new title can be seen re-written as 'PULLING TOOTH + SKELETON', whereas the original title was 'PULLING TOOTH, SKELETON'. More information on Pound can be located within the Artwork Gallery page further above. * Newcomer Artist James Bennett joined the GPK ranks by completing the artwork for cards 426a Quenching QUINCY and 426b Squirtin' BURTON. Bennett would go on to paint additional artwork for the OS12 set. * The same café environment used within the 1986 GPK Poster Set, for poster #1 Drink Garbage Pail Kola, is found within the OS11 cards 422a SHERI Cola and 422b All-Night DINAHboth painted by John Pound picturing the same toilet-drink and contents, tablecloth, booth, window curtain and the girl's clothes and ribbon style. Only the corner of the 'HOUSE SPECIAL' sign is shown in the card background which now reads 'SODAS' instead. * According to the Color Rough completed by artist James Warhola the type of Frisbee used for the artwork was in question, the notation a 'razor sharp / maybe sawblade or just (a) regular Frisbee?' can be seen on the artwork as feedback from Topps. A normal Frisbee was chosen in the end, pretty much the same type as the color rough and the Kid's clothing changed a bit with a 'GPK' acronym added to the baseball cap. The nomenclature for cards 437a Sliced BRAD and 437b Dead LEE was used as suggested by the artist. More information on Warhola can be located within the Artwork Gallery page further above. * This would be the only GPK release where the Uncut Sheet format was changed from a more archaic Topps set layout of 88 x 176 (8 columns x 11 rows) for the first production run to the regular 132 x 264 sheet (11 columns x 12 rows) for the second production run. Thanks to Lonnie Cummins for the additional information on the uncut sheet variations. * GPK Flowcharts were created for the later sets which showed the art director how the progress of the new set was going. It displayed what artist was working on which concept piece and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Oftentimes, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was located at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The OS11 set contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series or never saw the light of day: bagpipe (OS15), justice and scales, Nancy Reagan, kid as mop (Trash Can Trolls), VCR (OS15), mace steele head (OS11), hand puppet pet (OS15), flexing muscle - head as muscle (unpublished Bill Wray concept), Jack-in-the-box assassin. |
