The GPK 'Go On Vacation' thematic set was originally announced by the Topps Company, Inc. the week of May 10, 2021, with hobby electronic sell sheets breaking down the source material with mock-up promotional images, and retail e-sheets hitting the dark web a day later on May 11, 2021. The pending set, scheduled to be released in September 2021, was pushed back to November 24, 2021, even though physical product was available to view and on display for the New York Comic Con (NYCC) in October, and pushed back further still to December 15, 2021. After the new year rolled around for 2022, the set would still show up as ' January—July TBD' (to be determined) on release lists for months to come and flagged as 'Delayed' by Topps; they even 'cancelled' the set for one day on August 25, 2022, within a weekly distributor email, but corrected this error and kept the set flight in a holding pattern again; the Chrome 4 set was also feeling jetlagged with delays. On November 1, 2022, Topps finally re-announced the 2021S2 set as being scheduled to be released in February 2023 TBD, and stuck the landing! The globetrotting set was eventually scheduled to be released in stores and within hobby shops on February 22, 2023, and stated "Stink up your GPK collection with 2021 Garbage Pail Kids: Goes on Vacation, featuring some of the grossest, snottiest, crazy gags from around the globe!" The third-person present 'Goes', within the original title, was switched to 'Go'. In general, due to sticker/card-stock shortage (which mainly affected later online releases) and shipping issues during the Covid pandemic, retail sets were pushed back, having had no releases since Febuary 2021. Considering Topps was under a contractual agreement with Wal*Mart to include their exclusive 'Mega Box' within the Book Worms release by the shipping-date timeline, Topps was forced to skip (or push back) the previously announced "GPK Goes/Go On Vacation" and "Original Series 4 Chrome" retail/hobby sets. Product hit Walmart and Target store shelves early the week of the release and the online Topps Shop posted the hobby box on February 22, 2023, to both the U.S. and UK websites, and posted the retail tin to the U.S. shop and the Collector's tin to the UK shop. The Topps online sales tend to have limited stock in order not to compete with retailers, but considering the recent sorry state of printing, numbers appear to be higher and did not sell out quite as fast, only the U.S. hobby box posting sold out in less than an hour. This delayed released set would 'bring back' Jessica Kanzer as art director whom left Topps in January 2021. The set would introduce a circular 'cookie' tin for the Collector's Edition hobby "box", have retail tins again, and continue reverse card backs with artwork, puzzles, Tom Bunk's giant puzzle, and checklists. On March 03, 2023, Topps posted to Facebook, stating,
"A This vacation STINKS. The Garbage Pail Kids are finally off on their long
awaited vacation and are leaving their mark all around the world! Grab a tin today. — At some point during production, the Set Name '(GPK) Goes on Vacation' was changed to '(GPK) Go on Vacation', where 'Goes' is the third-person present of the word 'Go'. Although not cost effective, it would have been great to see the limited boxes sold on the Topps UK online store re-titled as 'Go on Holiday', the British term for 'Vacation'. — Due to a sticker-stock shortage, due to production & shipping issues, and due to COVID, along with a contract agreement with Wal*Mart, regarding their MEGA boxes for the 'book worms' 2022 release, Topps was forced to delay the 'GPK Go on Vacation' set from the 2021 calendar year to the 2023 calendar year. Thus, 'Mad MIKE' Boyajian switched up the site's set mascot and squeezed the tortoise GPK character to the set button, since the set wrapper is 'plain'.  — The first U.S. GPK set to have a hobby & retail pack without a GPK character. The Wrapper contains the set logo with a simple palm tree, two blue lines representing water waves, and two pelican birds flying off within the circular sunset haze area of the pack, along with four strange tire marks surrounding this unimpressive scenic destination. — The Checklist backs are all dated 2021, the year it was printed, but the set was not released until 2023. The regular Trademark Line '® & © 2021 THE TOPPS COMPANY, INC ALL RIGHTS RESERVED' can also be located on 13(x2) twin cards placed between the nameplate and the border of the card within the release, that also contains the base card identifyer number 'WWW.TOPPS.COM CODE# CMP048538', for cards 29, 30, 38, 39, 42, 55, 56, 65, 68, 69, 76, 78, and 91.  — Although the Short Prints subset cards are numbered SP-1 through SP-9 on card, the white blank backs are labeled as 'BASE STICKERS SHORT PRINTS PUZZLE A' through 'PUZZLE I', using the alphabet; was there supposed to be a 9-card puzzle on the backside, perhaps? — Much like the set as a whole, each of the four main artist contributors, Simko, Engstrom, Gross & McWilliams, all roughly complete 25% of the finished artwork each, this includes the four Collector Tins. The three retail 'suitcase' or luggage tins & characters were completed by Simko (the 'green' Messy TESSIE tin), Engstrom (the 'purple' JAY Decay tin), and Gross (the 'yellow'/gold JOE Blow tin), which collectively gives off a nice Mardi Gras colour scheme. The 'Go on Vacation' logo was added to the mock-up artwork at a later stage and the state & country stickers were slightly rearranged. The circular, hobby cookie-esque tin was completed by artist McWilliams.   — To potentially save on production costs, Collector Tins were last seen within the 2021 GPK Food Fight! release, and sequentially within the 2021 GPK Go on Vacation set (delayed until 2023), but dropped for the 2022 GPK book worm release. The 2021 GPK Food Fight! set was the last release during this period to have Single Value packs produced for Target stores, switching up the placement of the exclusive subset, the loaded sketch card (standard sketch card x4) and dropping the purple border parallel cards. — The State Quarter relic card for SQ-IN CORY On The Cob is misnamed, having nomenclature for artwork from the OS12 release by artist James Warhola, and instead has an image of Stuffed STEPHAN from the OS4 release by artist John Pound; both names and images work since both stem from a cornfield. Mention of Wyoming state was missing from the original set checklist sent out to dealers by Topps, but all 50 states are indeed represented within the release.  — Six out of the ten Don't Make Me Pull This Car Over subset card pairs have different colored Nameplates, and four out of the five Famous Landmarks (by Tom Bunk) subset card pairs have different colored nameplates. 2023S1 'Go on Vacation' release is the twenty-fourth Garbage Pail Kids set to
contain sketch cards numbering 1/1, one-of-a-kind, found within hobby and retail
boxes. Standard sketch cards (display box + value box) with the
ADAM Bomb character on the backside, shaped garbage can and car/vehicle sketch
cards (hobby collector) with no GPK character on the backside, panoramic
sketch cards (value box) with the TOMMY Tomb character, 'folded' triptych
sketch cards (hobby collector ) with both Barren AARON and Liberty LIBBY
characters on the backside, and loaded 'puzzle' sketch cards (four standard sketch
cards; value box). Note, considering these cards were sketched out in 2021,
artists were not able to share the images on social media for roughly two years.

At the time, I followed suit of a friend and mentor, Barry Nygma, and drew series 4 characters to coincide with the release of Chrome 4. That obviously didn’t happen, but regardless I hope you enjoy what I created, because I sure did have a blast making them all. The trash cans are gold leafed and marbled with—what I believe to be—the three most popular/favorite GPK characters and three worst/least favorite. Good luck and go find them all. |

Considering the set was developed and produced in the year 2021, the Trademark
Line '® & © 2021 THE TOPPS COMPANY, INC ALL
RIGHTS RESERVED' shows up on all packaging; boxes, tins, packs, and cards.
Note, the 'NO PURCHASE NECESSARY' redemption information
on the backside of boxes, tins, and packs are therefore outdated with a 'postmarked
by', 'received by', and 'drawing on or about' 2022 deadline dates. — Artist Brent Engstrom added the sunburn effects to cards 92a Sun BERNIE and 92b TANNER Lines, where the character is also pictured as the main artwork for the display box, after a perfect CPK-like kid was painted. The concept artwork description stated, "Sunburned kid with sunglasses and snot tan lines". Pictured below is the submitted B&W conceptual art and a final artwork stage during production prior to the sunburn effects were administered to the painting. 
 — The Topps Employee short prints subset contains two freelance artists, the first being artist Neil Camera for the SP-7 NEIL Camera card, which includes the 'Koduck Photos' character from the 3rd Series Wacky Packages set released in 1973, painted by artist David Gross. Although not initially seen within the original concept piece, Brent worked in the name 'TOM' on the airship with the same 'MAD' magazine font and color.

INTERNATIONAL TRADING CARD DAY Five new pieces of artwork were created, a trading-card themed subset, ten 1985 OS2 card characters, all mainly John Pound tribute pieces & one pulled from a future (not yet announced) GPK set, and fifteen 2023S1 GPK Go On Vacation card characters, by various artists, were used within the 2023 International Trading Card Day ("ITCD") set. The same fifteen 'Vacation' images were also used for artist autograph cards (#/10) within the special event release. NOTE: like with the first release, the character images are really zoomed-in on.
