The GPK 'InterGOOlactic Mayhem' thematic set announcement by the Topps Company, Inc. was grossly delayed, not occuring until the week of October 23, 2023, with hobby electronic sell sheets breaking down the source material containing mock-up promotional images, but no retail e-sheets hitting at a later date. Per Topps feedback, and as labeled upon the box and wrapper packaging, the set would be 'HOBBY PRODUCT ONLY' for this particular release with no retail outlets participating. The space-cadet sci-fi set was scheduled to be released online and within hobby shops on November 22, 2023, and stated "Stink up your GPK collection with 2023 Garbage Pail Kids: InterGOOlactic Mayhem, featuring some of the grossest, snottiest, craziest gags from Sci-Fi - including space travel, aliens and extraterrestrials, parallel universes and more!" Naturally, the wordplay of 'Intergalactic', makes it that much grosser.

Although sell sheets contain mock-up material only, it was reiterrated by Topps to collectors that the solid-framed parallel cards pictured would indeed still be the 'splatter effect' parallels of old, once printed. To possibly make up for having no GPK character pictured on the previous 'Vacation' release wrapper, this new release has two characters, one on the regular box edition and a second on the collector box edition. NOTE: the release was labeled 'HOBBY ONLY PRODUCT', due to retail locations, such as Target & Wal*Mart, only wanting chrome material going forward, so they were not under contract to distribute the new release, keeping it isolated to hobby and online sales only. Since both retail chains were already under contracts for Kids at Play, this next release may be the last non-chrome set we'll see at retail locations.

The GPK series included all-new artwork and contributions by artists Brent Engstrom, Joe Simko, David Gross, Smokin' Joe McWilliams, Tom Bunk, Mark Cruz (product manager), UNK (graphic design editor, product development), and Olga Vega (designer, entertainment packaging manager); along with original series artwork by veteran artist John Pound (sketch card backs). This delayed released set would 'bring back' Jessica Kanzer as art director whom left Topps in January 2021. The set would continue reverse card backs with artwork, puzzles, Tom Bunk's giant puzzle, and checklists. For the first production, each pack contained eight sticker cards, except "packs with a special insert may contain only 5 cards", with a suggested retail price of $2.49, or $4.99 if collector edition packs were sold seperately.

— On release day, Topps took to their Garbage Pail Kids Facebook page to spread the news, "InterGOOlactic Mayhem has just crashed landed into our galaxy! — Also on release day, November 22, 2023, the Topps Site created a 'InterGOOlactic Mayhem' launch page, specifically for the new 2023 Series 2 release, which included a backdrop ad image. Naturally, the four characters heavily used on the advertising were images used for the sell sheets, packaging, and as imagery for the 2023 New York Comic Con.



— The earliest sneak peek for the InterGOOlactic Mayhem set actually took place in early August of 2022 for the International Trading Card Day. The 3D motion artwork for Morph Card #4 (MC-4), completed by artist JOE Simko, was used for the still image for the GPKOS2-2 Leaky LINDSAY card. See ITCD page for more information.



— The base set card fronts only contain Black Text for numbering, no white, so there are quite a few cards that are difficult to make out the card number, mainly any with a very dark background.

— The 100-card Base Set is broken into quarters / four sections: artist Smokin' JOE McWilliams completed the first twenty-five cards, artist DAVID Gross for the second quarter, artist BRENT Engstrom for the the third section, and artist JOE Simko for the last quarter.









The 2023S2 'InterGOOlactic Mayhem' release is the twenty-fifth major Garbage Pail Kids set to contain sketch cards numbering 1/1, one-of-a-kind, found within hobby boxes. Standard sketch cards (hobby box)—with the OS4 Alien IAN character on the backside, shaped garbage can and space shuttle sketch cards (hobby collector)—with no GPK character on the backside, panoramic sketch cards (hobby box + hobby collector)—with the OS3 ROY Bot character, 'folded' triptych sketch cards (hobby collector )—with both OS1 + OS2 Spacey STACY characters on the backside, and loaded 'puzzle' sketch cards (four standard sketch cards; hobby box - box topper). — Veteran GPK artist TOM Bunk was once again asked to submit one of his MAD-esque GPK artwork pieces for the set's Giant Completed Puzzle back, focusing on intergalactic mayhem. Similar to artwork of yesteryears, Bunk uses a paste-up approach, where the artwork can be moved around, if needed. This same process was used for the Original Series card backs by the Topps art department, and I remember doing this for our weekly store ads when I worked for a True Value many moons ago (pun intended). As usual, Bunk's conceptual steps can change quite drastically, as can be seen comparing the 'tight pencil' artwork stage with the 'final artwork'. Per Wiki: "Paste up is a method of creating or laying out publication pages that predates the use of the now-standard computerized page design desktop publishing programs. Completed, or camera-ready, pages are known as mechanicals or mechanical art."




— Besides the miscellaneous chase-card subset material, next-gen GPK artist 'Smokin' JOE' McWilliams base-card artwork can be found for cards #1—25, the first quarter of the main set. I believe all but one are entertainment tributes, so source material focuses mainly on adult characters. Smokin's artwork for cards 24a ANNA-Matronic & 24b OTTO-Mated is a tribute for the 'Tobor the Great' (1954) film poster. This is very reminiscent to the 'Retro Sci-Fi' subset submissions that McWilliams painted for the 2018S2 'Oh, the Horror-ible!' set.



— Besides the miscellaneous chase-card subset material, next-gen GPK artist DAVID Gross base-card artwork can be found for cards #26—50, the second quarter of the main set. I believe all to be entertainment tributes, so source material focuses mainly on adult characters, which take on more of a caricature appearance in nature. The final artwork posted below is a tribute for the very popular protagonist, metroid hunter Samus Aran, from the Nintendo 'Metroid' franchise, for cards 40a Slurping SAMUS & 40b Met ROSIE.



— Besides the miscellaneous chase-card subset material, next-gen GPK artist Brent Engstrom base-card artwork can be found for cards #51—75, the third quarter of the main set. I believe all to be entertainment tributes, so source material focuses mainly on adult characters, but Brent has a way of capturing the childlike wonder of the 'Kids'. Strangely, an Unpublished piece by Engstrom was erroneously, assumingly, left out of the 'Time Warp' 10-character, 20-card subset. The sci-fi child-left-behind was tentatively titled 'Up CHUCK' & 'Renew ABEL'; although the character is a spitting image of OS5 170a RICHIE Retch & 170b LUKE puke; perhaps we'll see the image printed at a later date. Also pictured, The still-image of 3D motion artwork for Morph Card #3 (MC-3), Revved-Up ROBERT.



— Besides the miscellaneous chase-card subset material, next-gen GPK artist JOE Simko base-card artwork can be found for cards #76—100, the fourth quarter of the main set. I believe all but three are entertainment tributes, so source material focuses mainly on adult characters. Simko's artwork for cards 77a ALLEN Nation & 77b Alien NATHAN is a tribute for the 1988 'Alien Nation' movie. The extremely tight artwork was picked for the 'hobby collector' box top artwork and is also a nod to the OS1 character for cards 9a Boozin' BRUCE & 9b Drunk KEN, by artist JOHN Pound.



— The artists were asked to submit Concepts for the then upcoming GPK "Sci-Fi" set in mid-March of 2022, with final artwork being completed as early as mid-April of 2022. Due to the delay with the GPK 'Go on Vacation' retail release, the 'InterGOOlactic Mayem' set was also pushed back.
