RELEASE PERIOD : MARCH 2004 PRODUCT NUMBERS : 757-2, 758-2 + 758-2E The All-New Series 2 Garbage Pail Kids, aka ANS2 GPK for short, were released in the late winter of 2004 by the Topps Company, Inc. with the packaging developed in late 2003. The new GPK series is comprised of all new artwork by veteran artists John Pound, Tom Bunk, James Warhola, Frank Santopadre and concept art by Jay Lynch. The release also introduces several artists tested on on GPK including Strephon Taylor, Chris Hebel, John Czop and in-house concept artist and art director Jeff Zapata whom snuck a piece in. The set was art directed by brand manager John Williams and brings back artists Pat Glover and Sean Glover for the foil cards. For the first and second production run each foil pack, with a suggested retail price of $.99, contained five sticker cards with a great glossy finish, 1 Gold Foil card sticker and a Scratch 'n' Stink sticker inserted one in every six packs; the first chase cards found in a U.S. GPK series set. The set also introduces special bonus boxes containing a different bonus card each; a first for any GPK release. The foil stickers are rendered artwork of characters from the original releases by artists Pat and Sean Glover. The series surprisingly starts back at number one.

— An ADAM Bomb headshot, of the forever infamous GPK character for OS1 cards 8a ADAM Bomb & 8b Blasted BILLY, makes an appearance in the ANS2 set on the t-shirt of character 23a Downloadin' LOGAN & 23b Digital DEVIN, painted by artist John Pound. — The second U.S. GPK set to include Chase Cards; a special premium-type card with a harder-to-collect ratio. The twelve Scratch 'n' Stink stickers were inserted randomly, found one in every six packs (1:6) and number S1a through S6b. NOTE: card mock-up image. — The ANS2 Foil Cards have Garbage Pail Kids banners and nameplates with different colors; however, the ANS1 set contained foil cards with only red GPK banners and nameplates. — Artist Tom Bunk's last name, BUNK, can be seen on the tombstone in the background of cards 13a Scuzzy OZZY & 13b Rockin' RICK. — The first set to contain Bonus Cards located in special bonus pack boxes located at large retail chains. ANS1 had a bonus card sheet that contained three images from the base set. ANS2 bonus cards B1 On Camera CAMERON & B2 Paintball PAUL. The first U.S. Garbage Pail Kids character cards to NOT to have a twin A-name and B-name. — The second GPK series to have only Puzzle Backs; the set contains no comic or humor backs. This was due to limiting costs on the returning franchise; no expensenes for comic writing and additional artwork. Much like the ANS1 release, the second set to contain six, 9-card puzzles. Another first, the completed puzzles contain no nameplate like the ANS1 set, but unlike any series before have no GPK banners. The set also contains two rare sideways/horizontal puzzles and one puzzle image is from insert artwork for chase cards S1a Stony TONY & S1b Ol' Faith PHIL which may have been swapped out of the base set at some point during production. — One concept from the ANS2 set resemebles a character from the 1992 Trash Can Trolls (TCT) parody set. Both concept pieces were created and drawn by different artists. TCT cards 6a ANNE Tenna & 6b T.V. GUY by Tom Bunk and GPK cards 17a Dish GRACE & 17b Amped AMANDA by brother Pat & Sean Glover. — The Letter 'G', short for GPK, can be found on two cards within the ANS2 set: within the card images of 18a TAYLOR Tubby & 18b MORGAN Organ—on top of the characters head, which could be a subtle gag on the speculated 'happy' Teletubby, and also on cards 37a Rest Stop RUSS & 37b Wet BRETT—on the front grill of the car. — The ANS2 'Garbage Pail Kids : Gross Stickers STINK!' Ad Campaign centered around the new Scratch 'n Stink subset cards. The backside of the ANS1 character 33a Phat PHIL & 33b Ill WILL, by artist Tom Bunk, can be located in the bottom right hand corner of the ad holding a spray can and tagging the word 'STINK!', in a very OS1 character 30a New Wave DAVE & 30b Grafitti PETEY-type pose known for his free-style 'SMUT' tag. — Foil card number 'F16' can be found with two Different Colors; F16a Handy RANDY has a black number while F16b JORDAN Nuts has a 'white' number. — Two Images from the 1996 Bathroom Buddies (BB) humor sets has been used or reworked for the ANS2 set. The then unpublished 'pee in snow' 2nd Series piece, by artist Tom Bunk, for cards 20a Number JUAN & 20b Tinklin' Tyler and BB 1st Series 20a LARRY Laptop & 20b Internet BRET for cards 23a Downloadin' LOGAN & 23b Digital DEVIN. — The third set to have a card with the GPK Logo found within the artwork itself and not just on the header. The Garbage Pail Kid logo found on the bottom of the bobble-head for cards 11a Bobble BOB & 11b WILL Wobble. — The thirteenth series to contain cards with the GPK Acronym found within the artwork. The GPK acronym found on the life preserver of cards 3a Eaten ETHAN & 3b JOSÉ Soufflé; on the bottom of the skateboard of cards 8a SK8 NATE & 8b Flyin' RYAN; on the surfboard of cards 9a Waxed ZACK & 9b MAX Wax; on the baseball cap of cards 11a Bobble BOB & 11b WILL Wobble; on the knuckles of cards 13a Scuzzy OZZY & 13b Rockin' RICK; on the snowboard of cards 16a Dandruff DAN & 16b JAKE Flake; on the TV screen of cards 32a Hecklin' HECTOR & 32b Newsworthy NICK and on the TV of bonus card B1 On Camera CAMERON. — The GPK character Wacky JACKIE, from the 1985 OS1 set, has a misspelled or updated name for the new release; foil card F2a Wacky JACKY. NOTE: Topps mock-up card image. — The only Error Cards (not considered a variation) located within the release are particular blue and purple background cards which can be found with different shades of blue that look purple, or purple shades that look blue, depending on the amount of ink used during pressing. Certain cards from the older 80's sets can be found like this as well. — In January of 2004, issue #437 of MAD magazine contained the 'MAD 20 Dumbest People, Events, and Things of 2003' which included a GPK parody painted by artist Tom Bunk poking fun at Madonna and Britney Spears' MTV Music Awards kiss; MAD titled it Garbage Pail Kiss. 'Kids' changed to 'Kiss', earing changed to an eyeball-earing, card number changed from 17b to 42a... had this been OS1, this would've been the next card in the set. — The ANS2 release has the most interesting GPK Layout of any set, thus far; all of the horizontal card images are placed at the end of the set numbering 33a/b through 40a/b. It is also the only All-New Series wrapper with a $.99 price logo rather than the 99¢ price logo, up to this point. — The series surprisingly starts back at Number 1; as does the foil card subset; but an 'F' has been introduced to the numbering for this subset.

— In 2003, editer and artist, Jeff Zapata, of the Topps Entertainment Department, was approached to work on most of the concept sketches for the new GPK series due to the fact that Jay Lynch had a scheduling conflict while working on a new upcoming Wacky Packages set. You can find the list of concept art completed by Jeff Zapata below in the Comprehensive Checklist. Pictured below are several concepts by Zapata that were executed by veteran GPK artist John Pound for the release. Cards 2a AERIAL ARIEL & 2b Bubbly BRIANNA; NOTE: original concept a boy instead of a girl. Cards 4a Umbilical COREY & 4b Unraveled RAFAEL; NOTE: hands moved to the head and food added to the end of the umbilical cord. Cards 19a Spider MANNY & 19b Webby WESLEY; NOTE: Higher kick and background playground equipment added; 2nd swing removed. * — GPK concept card back artist and writer Jay Lynch was only able to create less than ten gag ideas for the ANS2 set due to a scheduling conflict with any upcoming Wacky Packages release; the other popular parody franchise of Topps. Cards 34a Toe Jam SAM and 34b Jammin' AMBER; Note: 'Toe-Jam JAN' nomenclature not used; artwork became horizontal. * — The GPK Pulled Artwork for cards 32a On Camera CAMERON & 32b RACHEL Retch from the base set and replaced by character 32a Hecklin' HECTOR & 32b Newsworthy NICK; the artwork for B1 On Camera CAMERON became a bonus card instead. The unreleased twin name #37 RACHEL Retch turned up later in the U.K. GPK album sticker set. * — Two characters paintings by Tom Bunk were requested by Topps to be updated before printing. The card image for character 29a Gassy GARRET & 29b Fizzy FRANCISCO had the plane crashing into the ocean background removed and replaced with seagulls flying around—most likely due to 9-11 sensitivity—and the card image for B1 On Camera CAMERON was widened in order to fit the card where the peron's leg has been extended and more vomit added; the baseboard also appears updated in the background; however, the extra artwork is still chopped off by the card border. Both pieces were most likely sent back to Bunk by Topps for updated touch-ups. * — The original artwork artwork for cards 17a Dish GRACE & 17b Amped AMANDA, painted by the Glover Brothers, Pat and Sean, is pictured below. This alternate version had a far less color palette; Topps had the artwork updated with more color and the attic wall/ ceiling-like line removed from the bedroom. The only color that stayed the same were the eletrical wavelengths. Like many new entries into ANS2, this ultimately feels like a test run piece thrown into the set; overall, the release was severely weakened this way by the art director. * — Veteran Garbage Pail Kids artist, Tom Bunk, completed sixteen images for the ANS2 set. Pictured below are several Color Rough characters of Bunk's created after the conceptual artwork was approved. These color roughs by Bunk, who often creates multiple versions, had the most changes from the concept stage to the final artwork found on printed card. Cards 7a Game Over GARY & 7b Germy JEREMY; NOTE: face replaced with a second hand. Cards 11a Bobble BOB & 11b WILL Wobble; NOTE: other bobbles and removed for the final artwork. Cards 25a Cookie-Tosser TESSA & 25b Krummy KIM; NOTE: the original green puke was 'mint' colored; the bird on the window sill was switched to a squirrel. * — Garbage Pail Kids artist, James Warhola, completed four paintings for the ANS2 set, least amount from the returning veteran artists, but somehow not only did one of his characters become a puzzle, but his artwork also found its way as the main mascot for the release, found on the wrapper and box packaging. * — GPK Veteran Artist John Pound completed fifteen paintings for the ANS2 set. Pictured below is a Pound color rough and tight pencil example. John's preliminary artwork tends to always look like the final artwork with little revisions since initial thumbnail drawings are not usually available. Cards 34a Toe Jam SAM and 34b Jammin' AMBER NOTE: much more forced perspective compared to the concept by Jay Lynch. 39a Deflated DAVID and 39b Squirtin' STEPHEN NOTE: concept by Frank Santopadre; original concept a female; hair pigtails removed. * — The GPK Next-Gen Artists who were tested out and contributed to the new set were Strephen Taylor with four pieces, John Czop with one piece, Chris Hebel with one piece and Pat Glover & Sean Glover with six pieces; The Glover brothers worked on the rendered artwork of the Foil cards for the ANS1 through ANS3 sets. * — The image for cards 28a Armed ARNIE & 28b OSCAR La Vista was drawn and painted by Jeff Zapata, but was never intended for the new release until an individual at Topps saw the painting and apparently liked it. It was allegedley an internal test to see what type of artwork Topps would accept for their sets. The original piece had machine guns which were painted over with water guns instead. In theory, no Topps employee is supposed to have published artwork in the Garbage Pail Kids sets.
