The All-New Series 4 Garbage Pail Kids, aka ANS4 GPK for short, was released in the Spring of 2005 by the Topps Company, Inc. and distributed in the month of April. The new set celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Garbage Pail Kids brand and was comprised of all new artwork by veteran artists John Pound, Tom Bunk and James Warhola with concept artwork by Jay Lynch. The set also includes next-generation GPK artwork by artists Luis Diaz, Ray Lago, David Gross, Strephon Taylor and Scott Shaw,who worked on the comic backs with Lynch, along with newcomers John Cebollero, Claude St. Aubin, Mark Sparacio and George Wright with concept artwork by art director Jeff Zapata. The set introduces first time sketch cards for the GPK brand and were drawn by several previously listed artists along with Justin Green and Don Perlin whose work will appear in future GPK projects. The naming panel for the gags were written by Jay Lynch, John Pound, Tom Bunk, Jeff Zapata and John Williams.

A total of two main production runs were released during a continued interest of old 80's nostalgic toys and hobbies during this period which included product for both hobby and retail stores. For the first and second production runs each foil pack, with a suggested retail price of 99¢, contained 5 sticker cards on 14-card stock, a Game card on 12 cards stock and a chance to come across a Scratch 'n' Stink sticker (inserted 1:6), a Tattoo card (inserted 1:4) and an artist autographed Sketch card which was packaged one per hobby box; not located withinretail boxes. The set also contained 4 bonus cards that were found in special 'value boxes' and newly introduced 'blister packs' located at different retail chains. The Game cards are rendered artwork of characters from the original releases outsourced by Topps and drawn by Efrain Cintron of the art Studio Apt. 5A. The set once again starts back at number one; except for the bonus cards that run numerically from the previous set.

— The 20th Anniversary of GPK is celebrated by a third iteration of John Pound's iconic OS1 mascot, from cards 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted BILLY, showcasing the character jumping out of a cake celebrating 20 gross years; this time including 'gray matter'. The second installment stems from the OS7 set for cards 260a ADAM Boom and 260b Blasted Billy II with the character farting his explosive personality. The original Topps mock-up for ANS4 card 40a had the name 'ADAM Da Bomb', but Topps went with the classic names 40a ADAM Bomb and 40b Blasted BILLY instead. A female version can be found in the OS15 set as cards 620a ADA Bomb and 620b Blasted BETTY and a troll version with the Trash Can Trolls set as cards 1a JOEL Troll and 1b Fall-Out PAUL (with the classic ADAM Bomb character in the background). The 2015S2 set which celebrates the 30th anniversary of GPK contains cards 1a ADAM Bomb and 1b Blasted BILLY III; and the 2016S1 Applie Pie in Your Face set includes different variations of the name ADAM Bomb and contains Blasted BILLY V, VI and VII, however, no Blasted BILLY IV exists to date.



— The tentative ANS4 Checklist had different names compared to the released product: Base cards 25b Low Man DAN became 25b High Man DAN and 40a ADAM Da Bomb and 40b Nuked LUKE changed to 40a ADAM Bomb and 40b Blasted BILLY; Scratch 'n' Stink card names S4a TBD (to be determined) became S4a FORREST Sump, S4b Wasted WARREN became S4b Wastin' JASON, S5a TBD became S5a Stink Blot STEPHANIE, S5b Must See LEE became S5b Rorschach TESSA, S6a TBD became S6a VINNIE Vomit and S6b Up N' Away JAY became S6b Barf Bag BRAD; Tattoo card #9 of 10 Scuba Doo LOU was switched to character #9 of 10 ADAM Bomb.

— ANS4 is the first Garbage Pail Kids set to contain Game Cards, numbering 1 - 36, created by Efrain Cintron of the art Studio Apt. 5A. Each pack comes with a 'Game Rules' card. Three of the thirty-six Game cards are hard-to-find gold Foil cards (1:72); a fun spoof on the famous CGG cards of yesteryears like Pokémon, etc. The set also features returning Scratch 'N Stink stickers for the third time numbering S1a/b through S6a/b (1:6); the cards have a lower case 's' instead of the upper case 'S' as before.



— The ANS4 set is also the first GPK set to contain the Sketch Cards numbering 1/1; found one per hobby box. Seven GPK artists worked on the Sketch cards with the following pack odds; veteran artists John Pound (1:101), Tom Bunk (1:1,138) and Jay Lynch (1:218), next-generation artists Strephon Taylor (1:164) and John Czop (1:3,297) and newcomers Don Perlin (1:164) and Justin Green (1:164). James Warhola's OS12 artwork for cards 486a and 486b shows up on the reverse card back. An eigth sketch card artist, Topps art director Jeff Zapata, drew and autographed exclusive sketch cards for the 2005 San Diego Comic Con on official Topps card stock along with Strephon Taylor, both in blue ink.



— Artist Tom Bunk's first name can be found on the bottled condiment titled "Tom's Salad Dressing" on cards 16a COLE Slawed and 16b SAL Salad.

— The ANS4 set is also the first GPK set to contain the new chase Tattoo Cards numbering 1 through 10 located in packs randomly (1:4). GPK tattoos first showed up in the Italian SGORBIONS Holidays set.



— The set contains five card pairs that can be found with Black & White Numbers; this phenomenon can be found in the OS2 set with cards 46a and 46b, in the OS3 set with variation cards 113a, and within the OS7 set with variation cards 289b. ANS4 cards 17a and 17b, 21a and 21b, 23a and 23b and cards 24a and 24b have a white and black number, respectively, and cards 26a has a black number and 26b has a white number.

— The ANS2 Wacky Packages set contains a card back that has a parody of The Topps Company, Inc. website called The Slopps Company, Inc. which includes various products found on the companies website including a small spoof and picture of Topps' previous site Garbage Pail Kids World titled 'Gone To Jail Kids World' for card #41 Queerasil.



— The fithteenth set to contain cards with the GPK Acronym (or initialism) found within the artwork. The acronym is found on the earring of cards 2a PARIS Embarrassment and 2b MARIS Wiltin', on the camp sign of cards 10a COLIN Bowel and 10b Scoutin' SCOUT, on the subway train of cards 14a Headless LESLIE and 14b MADISON Halved, on the sale sign pinned to the bulletin board of cards 17a WALTER Cooler and 17b Wizzin' WILL, on the gass station pump of cards 28a Fuelin' JULIAN and 28b Gassin' GRANT and on the airplane cup of cards S6a VINNIE Vomit and S6b Barf Bag BRAD.

— The set has twenty Puzzle Puke pieces of artwork on the backside completed by Jay Lynch and Scott Shaw; the card back puzzles is a returning theme from the OS11 and OS13 GPK sets, no trademark.



— If you sent correspondence to artist Strephon Taylor with cards to sign, he would include a personalized GFK (Garbage Fail Kid) Slopps Retch Card on thin card stock that parodies the Topps Sketch cards design. The image of Strephon Taylor was taken from the Autograph card from the Silly CD's : Series II release from 2003.



— Two of artist Luis Diaz's pieces pay tribute to Vintage GPK characters by placing sticker images throughout the artwork. Cards 17a WALTER Cooler and 17b Wizzin' WILL showcase OS2 53a Jolted JOEL and 53b Live MIKE, OS2 68a OLIVER Twisted and 68b Dizzy DAVE and OS3 cards 87a Hot Head HARVEY and 87b ROY Bot. Cards B7 Propelled MIGUEL has OS4 131a Stuffed STEPHEN and 131b RUTHERFORD B. Hay, OS4 157a LARRY Lips and 157b Distortin' MORTON and OS4 cards 159a Catty CATHY and 159b KITTY Litter; the character is also wearing a t-shirt with the OS1 image of cards 8a ADAM Bomb and 8b Blasted BILLY.

— Two of artist Luis Diaz's Signature Pieces can be found on two different cards within the ANS4 set; both make appearances in the ANS5 GPK set as well. LD Monster is portrayed on the cork bulletin board of cards 17a WALTER Cooler and 17b Wizzin' WILL. The pink water bottle, first mentioned in the ANS3 Fun Facts & Tidbits section, can be found in cards 36a NOAH's Barf and 36b High-Water MARK within the barf. The same card also pays tribute to the Wacky Packages artwork completed by Diaz by placing the ANS2 WP product parody #10 STARDUCKS within the same barf; concept by Frank Santopadre and realized by Jeff Zapata.



— In early 2006, the Garbage Pail Kids Underground (GPKUG) together with Alex J., the GPD (Garbage Pail Dude), released a home-made Compact Disc (CD) titled Garbage Parody Kids with fourteen songs spoofing the GPK canon. The cover artwork was illustrated by artist Luis Diaz and reworked from an unpublished ANS3 GPK concept piece with the LD Monster character and several GPK card images added: OS1 26a Slobby ROBBIE and 26b Fat MATT, OS2 53a Jolted JOEL and 53b Live MIKE, OS2 74a MARK Bark and 74b Kennel KENNY and ANS4 33a Hollow WAYNE and 33b JACQUELINE Lantern. A numbered sketch card was included (1/100).



— The series Checklist is a first for any GPK set and contains font of different sizes with the name larger then the word, much like the Trash Can Trolls checklist without the bold appearance. The Insert checklist remains in the same style as previous releases.

— The Puzzle Backs comprise five puzzles with no nameplates and no GPK logo as the previous 'All-New' releases except the purple border puzzle that contains the GPK logo due to the '20 Gross Years' message on the cake. With reverse card backs in the set there is less room for six puzzles as with the ANS1 and ANS2 sets that contained no original backs.

— The director of the Art Department at Topps, Jeff Zapata, had John Pound draw up a new GPK Model Sheet for the ANS4 set to send to the new GPK artists in training; Pound completed the pencil art on 08/25/2004. Jeff planned to have Pound paint the model sheet for the following release (which can be seen in the ANS5 GPK History section). GPK Model Sheets were created by the art department in the late 80's, drawn by Tom Bunk, and distributed to the different artists prior to the OS10 set once the Kids' features were forced to be changed by the CPK lawsuit. The old model sheets can be seen within the OS10 page.



— Veteran GPK artist John Pound completed twelve paintings for the ANS4 set. Pound's preliminary artwork tends to always look like the final artwork with little revisions since the original thumbnail drawings have not been made public. A couple of ANS4 artwork pieces stemmed from pencil roughs of Pound's from 1988 during the original GPK releases that were later re-drawn by Jeff Zapata for the new set including images for cards 13a Fallen ANGEL and 13b Airsick ARIEL and cards 15a Jumpin' JEN and 15b MEGAN Trouble.

— Vetarn GPK artist Tom Bunk completed fifteen paintings for the ANS4 set. Bunk's sketch and color rough artwork tends to involve several variations or renditions of the character. One ANS4 piece stemmed from a pencil rough of Bunk's from 1988 during the original GPK releases that was redrawn by Jeff Zapata for the new set which included the image for cards 14a Headless LESLIE and 14b MADISON Halved.

— Veteran Garbage Pail Kids artist James Warhola completed three paintings for the All-New Series 4 set; less than the number he finished for All-New Series 2 and All-New Series 3.

— The Unpublished cards 36a Starstruck CHUCK and 36b MARSHALL Artless painted by Luis Diaz and a titled 'Frankenfurter' piece painted by Ray Lago were not used for the planned ANS3 release but held back for the ANS4 set as cards 7a Nin JACK and 7b MARSHALL Artless and cards S1a FRANK N. Wiener and S1b OSCAR Mire, respectively. An initial tight pencil rough for Luis Diaz's ninja piece is pictured below.



— Concept GPK Artist Keith Webb returned for the ANS4 set and submitted some great concepts for the ANS3, however, all but one were accepted or approved. Pictured below is a concept for that is very similar to the original concept by Tom Bunk from 1988 that was redrawn by Jeff Zapata for the set but credit goes to Webb. Also pictured below are eight concepts not found in the new set. Cards 14a Headless LESLIE and 14b MADISON Halved ; Note: store front entrance instead ofa subway train scenario; character without a shocked look; nice touch with GPK poster and packs.









— A packaging concept by artist Jay Lynch that did not make it into the release; as auctioned off of eBay through the Topps Vault in the Fall of 2006. The piece depicts a Kid climbing out of a garbage can; ADAM Bomb was used for the ANS4 packaging instead. Some of the suggested names : 'BERNARD Discard', 'BRUCE Refuse', 'Recycled BILL' and 'JOHNNY Trash' (name parody of Johnny Cash). Lynch created the comic backs for the new set along with Scott Shaw.



— The GPK Next-Gen Artists who were returning or tested out and contributed to the new set were Luis Diaz with nine pieces, David Gross with four pieces, Ray Lago with three pieces, George Wright with one piece, John Cebellero with one piece, Mark Sparacio with one piece and Claude St. Aubin with one piece. Efrain Cintron worked on the rendered artwork of the Game cards for the set.
