Essential Oil Recipes ~

Essential oils are the true, natural, pure oils of the plant, petals, bark, etc...

These oils are very concentrated, so you must dilute them first if you are going to wear them on your skin. If you don't, they can irritate and burn your skin. This is how potent the natural oils are. Remember, there are poisonous plants out there, so their oils will be poisonous too. Don't wear these, and if you do use them, make sure the area you are working in is properly ventilhated.

Diluting oils....

When you are going to wear essentail oils on your skin, always always dilute them first.

In a clean, steralized glass jar (or ceramic, porceline, etc..never plastic or aluminum) add about 1/8 cup of any of the following vegetable oils as your base oil:
Almond (but it tends to go rancid quick, so use right away)
Apricot Kernal (but does not have an apricot-like scent)
Avacado
Coconut
Grapeseed
Hazelnut
Jojoba (which is actually a liquid form of wax, but holds oil's scents better and can be kept for a longer period of time.)
Olive (for heavier, stronger scents)
Safflower
Sunflower

Use an eye dropper to add essential oils to base oil. Swirl oils clockwise to mix them, don't shake or stir them. They say to start with 5-7 drops of essential oil, then judge from there if you need to add more.

And always store your oils in a cool, dark place away from heat and moisture. Keep oils stored in airtight, dark colored glass bottles, never plastic.

A Little Extra....

There are some oils out there that have a little something about them that you should be aware of....

Never use oils that come from animals...

Most of the time, if not always, the animals are cruely tortured and killed for their oils.

Ambergris ~ This scent, a secretion of the intestines of sperm whales, was originally found washed up on shore and was then gathered for its musky, earthy scent, magical & aphrodisiac powers, and early Arabs used it in their cooking. Once word got out on this scent and where to obtain it, people started killing these whales for it. Never use true ambergris for this reason.

Civet ~ This scent is a pungent, yellow secretion of the civet cat. And unlike other animals that may have had the ease of being killed for their oils, the civet cat is painfully scraped for theirs. It is a gamey odor, very potent and highly offensive to the nose. Hence, another reason to not have to use it! In very small amounts does it smell sweet. The artificial civet oil is just as effective.

Musk ~ Famous scent for perfumes, incense, air freshners, etc... This was extracted from the scent glands of the male musk deer. Granted, the extraction could be made without killing the deer, but unfortunately it is hardly considered.

There are currently no available true essential oils for the following:

Lotus~

Magnolia~

Sweet Pea~

Xtra...

Tonka~ vanilla scented. Tonka beans are toxic so do not use on skin.

Turberose~ richly scented, very sweet, but true Turberose is rarely available.

Sandalwood~ you may substitute with cedarwood.
