[ILM ranch]
finally bck ... now gotto adjust my bioclock to spore timeline, means more waking up in the middle of the nite : (
most fruitful part of san fransisco is ilm ranch trip. entrance onli by invitation and we r lucky to ve sonny noe marjo in ilm. she and her spanish colleage, w a spanish name i cant remember, brought us in. contrary to my expectation, the ranch is trully a ranch, vast countryside and hills, where george lucas reared lamas (lotsa lamas), cows & peacocks (they look like peacocks in case they arent). the state of art sound film efx are produced here in this nature reserve look alike place. security is tight, the place is well concealed ... no signboards or indication at all at the entrance that it s the ranch, jus a 1 man security post at the end of a long winding road ... i was told there r security cameras along the way in the forestry but they can onli pointed out the ones at the post hidden behind the post to us ... this s george lucas empire manzzz ... the look & feel of it? it jus felt like a jurassic park!!! except lamas instead of T-Rex ... ahhaha

actaulli we din get to see much of it, cos we arent allow in many places and marjo needed to get bck to ilm san rafael office. wat we see: the main house, inside got display of some actaul film props like indiana jones whip & hat, lite sabres etc, the meeting room, the old style library. then we r outside the archive center that was said to ve books & magazines rite even from issue 1. the 'stag' (dunnoe if it s spell this way) theatre ... best in the world (?)... where lucas and ppl preview thier films and the spanish guy said the sound is some decibre higher than usual in there, some actors cant stand it when previewing their movies. also go to the gift shop where i oso dunnoe y i buy the not-so-cheap souvenirs i dun really need. had spaghetti in the tech building w military style trays ( in line with the description of ilm being a factory, so the operators eat this way ... hahaaha), din managed to eat at the main house cos priority to business, client type ppl.

the more enriching part turn out to be listening to the ilm animation supervisors, their laments and dissactisfaction ... the same old same old ... so, it s jus the same everywhere isnt it? the same old same old ... jus that they are werking on high profile stuffs and we arent. now we noe y the unsatisfactory results of the scorpion king monsters in the mummy returns ... the spanish animates it ... the reason needless to elaborate ... we all noe ... the same old same old.

everything is closing shop now in the convention center, internet access is onli until 530pm. too bad most of the sketches i attended on the last day is kinda technical. pearl harbor fly thro sequence is quite interesting, the awful number of elements in the composites. but i m most glad to sit in the presentation of 'summer breeze', a beautiful piece of work-in-progress, 3 man production with off the shelf software (maya). (well, they do ve support from their college in terms of facilities. i din regret going up to talk to them after the presentation, exchanging contacts. 1 of the co-direcors was in tears after the talk downstage, kinda understands how she feels.

saw making of final fantasy book ... they sold out but i tink should be available in spore in bulks soon ... not too bad.
las day liao ... this morning skecth got ilm talking more on pearl harbor, double negative on enemy of the gates, once again i still dont figure how they texture the whole city of ruins with camera mapping of a matte painting. then there s this german 3 man team which did an impressive job on wave of death, handling a sequence of a dam destruction in 6 weeks, faking rule based dynamics.
cats and dogs seemed really impressive, yesterdae sit thro rythm and hues session on cg fur. then there s this image-based rendering which is new popular rendering method widely used and which lightwave renderer support. i tried the fake HDR renedering with max, now it s ilm ppl talking abt the real thing which is kinda chime, equations and stuffs. seems like it s pretty hard to do cg without programmers and tech directors, even the sleigh in crinch is animated by rule based dynamics written by these ppl ... animators to animate that sorta motion and interaction is unimaginable. so afterall, maybe learning maths and science is still important huh? haha.

dun tink u guys missing too much lah ... sooner or later those info ll be widely spread. i cant tell any trends jus moving in and out of the skecthes and exhibitions ... but did see this jap guy giving presentation in jap at softimage booth ... kinda respected. important folks ah .. i may ve brush past and not know them ... but many of the sketches are given by someone fr ilm or pixar or pdi. i went to this character studio users gathering and did meet the programmers behind character studio , and the woman who did the dancing pig if u remember, apparently she s also kinda recognised guru for CS, and few others she intro as 'celebrity', writers of books and ppl like tat, but i dun noe abt earlier on.
i jus bought the 3 super ex siggraph dvds ... damn ... and 2 consequetive mornings i failed to get the pixar poster.

finally fiish dropping all the demo cds and vhs i brought along. the job got onli 14 iring companies ... Lucas art entertainment is the mst attractive but then they onli looking 4 graphic artist. went to a interesting sketch yesterdae, on merging 2d and 3d techniques, 1st speaker fr disney is boring cos giving onli general info. the guy fr ilm better, show how they use camera mapping techniques on matte paintings to achieve shots in feature films ... then the jap co. olm (?? ilm &olm) , which did pokemon, showcase the jap way of merging 2d & 3d ... quite different fr western methods but principles arent too far apart, i tink they did a great job in those ways too. pokemon 3 movie seems not bad after their talk hahaa ... btw, my fren siepau saw sequences of a new dreamworks movie, spirits, in another sketch i din go.

too many things to see on 1st day ... drop some showreel cds at pdi, ilm and rythm and hues ... jus for the sake of it lah. som e things i see: lightwave 7 and messiah, discreet s more interest to promote their compositing softwares than max, gonna grab the demo dvd from manex, pulse 3d use muppet to realtime motion con cg character, square s realtime playbck tech ... and lot i missed. seen the electronic threatre ... not gonna post long comments , but nothing spectacular but ve interesting stuffs probably ve to buy the super ex dvds to see all other werks ... electronic threatre not worth it, the big boys jus showing off the movie effects sequence i seen so many times. ok going for more freebies now!

met up with a fren working in sony entertainment. he brought us to visit a game studio heavy iron studios, div of THQ, did game on evil dead. well i dont play playstation or any games so i jus see look onli. they r werking on a ps game on scooby doo, tink it s to release along with its feature film ... the studio is really nice although still consider small but if spore got somting like tat ...... very good werk done on maya and the art director show us the concept drawings/paintings ... beri nice.
but the short trip to venice beach b4 that was oso 'enriching' ... hehehhe ... nice shore + nice bods ....
nothing much going on for us in siggraph yet, cos we r conference select ... tmr should be more exciting i guess.

yesterdae go hollywood, accidentally come across world animation celebration festival. too bad metropolis was shown the nite b4. we managed to catch the making of ice age, with the bluesky studio team, including chris wedge presenting. b4 that an accident happened, some woman tripped and fell from the stairs. and we all have to clear out of the threatre, after lining up for quite sometime to get in.
this is the 2nd interesting event that happened, after the drunkard man incident during my transit wait at Tokyo Narita airport.

while i was chatting with a lovely fren 1 day on icq, i remember something silly i did when small and told her.

as a boy, i love watching jap superheroes shows esp. Ultraman and Masked Rider. however i was really a timid boy and needed to station myself behind the sofa b4 the show would start, so i could hide behind it once the monsters appeared. seeing that, my parents would pretend to switch the tv off but i would scream in protest. i wanted to watch, even if i could only understand the last 5 minutes of action sequence, in which half the time i would be behind the sofa.

dun think they will ever understand this complex love-fear psychology of their little boy for his favourite tv programme.

laughing at the boy back then, would probably be enough to show that this man now has grown out of that silly mentality.

but there are just too many times that, even as a man, i fear what i love, however much i love.

and vice versa.

god knows how much i want to tell her.

las time he used to buy me coffee after he finished selling pirated vcds and tell mi abt his misadventures when he was young and reckless.
he said he 's got very long hair bck then and was always chased around by mata who would make him cut his hair. hence, on the streets, over the rooftops, and all over chinatown he would run, to keep his hair long, to keep his hair flowing free.
he said that for 15 yrs no mata in chinatown could outrun him.
it s really hard to imagine him the long hair rebellious youth he once was, but it truly surprised mi, for a pirated vcd selling ah pek, to display such sophiscation in storytelling.
recently, i heard laokeong is thinking of going to yunnan haircare center.

Gee...seems like I'm displaying the same symptoms as do Gatchaman...I'm just buying books like there's no tomorrow...
especially on my meagre NS allowance of $295 ? I can't stop. Withdrawal symptoms includes clammy hands, frustration
and an inclined desire to buy even more books on the next Kinokuniya visit or any bookstore. I now have $9.60 in my

as the experienced party who ve experimented on various sleep-induction methods, i mus say to ur disappointment tat there seems not at all an available long term solution. flu tablets, fever tablets, cough solutions ... the body would jus get immune to them after sometime.
to me, it seems comparatively easier to stay awake than to get to sleep.
maybe u shouldnt wonder too much abt everyone 's dreams and jus dream your own dream.

it's 4.09am and i can't sleep... it's driving me nuts as i try to keep calm. must be the chamomile tea i drank. but i thought it was good for inducing sleep?? gatchaman, besides vodka have you found any other effective way of getting to sleep (soundly)? i was thinking of taking my rash medicine that makes one terribly drowsy... so terrible that 1/2 a tab can render me lethargic and zombie-like for a whole day or more... i think i shall live with it and hopefully get better sleep tonight. wonder what everyone's dreaming of. :)
