thumbs up for WINGED MIGRATION, the beautifully shot documentary about birds migration. my best film fest show so far : )
besides the wonderful shots & superb music tracks, there is this one strong feeling which came to me during & after the show. how beautiful the way those birds move! be it soaring in the air, diving into the water for food, or spreading their wings in some rituous pose, their movements are so filled with grace. we humans, except for a fraction of maybe dancers or acrobats, simply pale in comparison.
there are production notes at the website on the innovative techniques they used to capture close range shots of the birds migration in air, sea or ground. cameramen used a variety of ways to follow the movements of the birds, that includes usage of special gliders, balloons & bikes. check it out! :: daydreamer 4/26/2003 12:23:00 AM [+]

just finished watching my 2nd film fest movie this year, man without a past. it s just as good as they said in the reviews. hence, in a way, it also compensated the unoriginal, pretentious & narcassitic dazzling i watched on monday. that s so far the 'all-time most lousy film fest movie' for me.
but going to film fest also has surprises other than the unexpectedly good or bad movies we ve chosen. it s a chance to meet old frens, even those i ve long forgotten. some of those are 'my kinda people' who would go to film festivals. but there r also some who really caught me by surprise, to know that they belong to the film fest crowd too.
i ve got 3 more shows to go. looking forward to more pleasant surprises. :: daydreamer 4/23/2003 11:52:00 PM [+]

although i do ve better things to do, i made a search on google with my name & found this, which was like done 2 years ago (?). i never got to see the write-up until now. i sorta remember that was the time i naively believe i m really somebody after getting a few awards. the fact is, now i m still as nobody as i ve always been. :: daydreamer 4/18/2003 12:40:00 AM [+]

birds of prey will take over smallville timeslot on wed night. this time it s batman 's disciple who would be put into the limelight. i read that the dark knight would appear in the premiere episode, only to disappear mysteriously, leaving behind a vacuum in the crime fighting scene of gotham. girl power would then reign as batgirl teams up with 2 other lethal ladies in black leather. i m looking forward to it.
loius vuitton decides to expand their target market to a younger age group. they got famous japanese designer (whom i only know the kanji name chun shang long) to make a 5 min promo animation, superflat monogram. it has a teeny girl character, cute flying pandas & colorful fantastical scenes, all set to appeal to lovers of all things kawaii. it also carries a very graphical feel, understandable due to the artist 's well established personal style. the animation is playing on the TV screen outside LV s boutique at taka until end april. i like it alot although it dont seem to be attracting much, or any attention at all, when i m the only one standing there watching it yesterday.
sis & bf make an enterprising move to set up a hokkien mee stall in chinatown area. they decided on the slow & steady progress by selling mainly traditional hokkien prawn noodle first, while slowly introducing more creative 'italian favoured prawn noodle' & 'herbal prawn noodle'. i m tasked to help out on the signage & some promotional posters. it s pretty rush & i m not exactly well versed in such design works. currently i ve this idea of a fat chef prawn mascot in mind & has seeked for the expert assistance from evil rei to realise it.
i m a little surprised when sis told me about it. but then she would still keep her current job only helping out after work. what surprised me more, like in the movies, is the sudden revelation of my brother s childhood dream to sell soya bean drinks, after he know abt my sis 's bold endeavour. i ve been very close to my bro but this s something i never know.
his rationale is that everybody needs to drink & eat. thus, it s the most secured of livelihoods. we all now see the possibility of a family franchise in B&R. although the picture would surely be more complete if i ve developed some talent in the art of chay guay tiao. :: daydreamer 4/13/2003 02:43:00 PM [+]

"i like being out of work. it makes you think about who you really are."
that s a line in the korean film who are u by the male lead, when the his love interest told him she s been out of work for 2 years due to her hearing disability.
this dialogue has got nothing much to do with what this movie is about but it seems the only thing in the movie that i can identify with most. the guy who writes that line must know that kinda experience well in his personal life.
maybe it has got to do with the fact that one dont feel defined merely by his work, which for many occupies a major part of their life. & of course there would be ample time to think of the other roles you play as a person. besides being an engineer, a salesman or a manager, you suddenly remember as well, how u flair as a husband, a daughter or a friend. then there are also the many other things u used to do so much other than your job.
nevertheless, having said that, all that time & self-reflection are really luxuries that most of us cant afford to enjoy, at least not for long. i would be crazy to want no work in order to reflect on my identity. :: daydreamer 4/06/2003 12:21:00 AM [+]

i ve looked forward to straits times interview with jerry bruckheimer on his views on the iraq war today. u see, jerry is this hotshot director who makes loud, noisy action movies like top gun, armaggeddon, con air, pearl harbour, black hawk down, etc ... u get the picture. although i do enjoy top gun alot, & could bear with armaggedon as well as bruce willis, i m in general full of distaste for what he has got (or has not got) to say in most of his films. i must stress that such distaste is very personal & subjective.
however the interview is not as interesting as it appears though. jerry is a sensible man who arent that stupid to be saying the same things he did in his movies. & every answer is just so politically correct, emphasizing his sole aim to entertain the mass. to his credit, he didnt try to put up a hypocritical act making anti-war comments or call for peace. or maybe he just didnt want to say what he dont believe in, even if he dont say what he really believes.
btw, i m pretty surprised to know that he made the family movie kangeroo jack. maybe he just come out with the money. a talking kangeroo just dont fit the profile of the ideal american hero in his movies, although equally ridiculous to me. :: daydreamer 4/05/2003 12:27:00 AM [+]

my job is so dependent on computers & the worst nightmare is when they r not in order.
serves me right for having so little interest in understanding this working partner inside out & outside in. i begin my trade as a computer idiot, & even now that i m proficient with my craft i feel i still very much the computer idiot.
what a frustrating day installing 3d max again & again. urgggggghhhhhhhh ......!!!! :: daydreamer 4/04/2003 11:34:00 PM [+]

hweeling s been travelling all over europe for half a month (?) already. she s updating her journey on her blog all this while. i ve been too busy & only keep track of her interesting journal once a while & did a bit of head-scratching sometimes with names of places like ushuaia & patagonia.
she has got a nice quotation on 1 of the posts:
there are some places where we remain, and some places that remain in us ...
i m glad i had visited hong kong last year. it s a very memorable trip with my family & left me such a great impression of that place. of course little would i ve expected then of the outbreak now that makes things so different.
meich has also left for her europe tour last saturday. i think as long as the money part is ok, i should travel more to see the world as much as i can. although i m not without concerns about safety, it would be a sad thing if we ve to live in isolation coz of war & diseases. :: daydreamer 4/01/2003 11:58:00 PM [+]
