The Cardassian forces have only three ranks, Glinn, the lowest, Gul, roughly equivilent to a Starfleet Captain, and Legate, the highest rank on Cardassia. Damar, the leader of Cardassia, holds the rank of Legate and we have watched him rise from a Glinn serving aboard the freighter Groumal!
The present Cardassian uniform was first seen by the crew of the Enterprise on stardate 46357.4. It consists of a black soft fabric uniform with dull grey rigid body armour over the upper body. Much of the exquisite detail of this uniform goes unnoticed due to its dark colours.

The differences between Gul
Dukat, on the left, and Legate Dukat, on the right, are
easy to see. The Gul's uniform has the typical drab grey armour and high top armoured boots. The Legate's armour has bright silver hi lights and a gold badge (hidden by the rifle sling in this photo) and no high boots. The uniform also covers the lower scales of the neck ridges. |

The picture above shows the gold Cardassian symbol that denotes the rank of Legate. It also shows the intricate inverted "V'' pattern of pleated fabric that runs down the sleeve and pant leg of all Cardassian uniforms. The ornate band on the left wrist is the communicator device, also common to all ranks.
