Samantha and Chloe were fooling around as they set up for the party that Samantha was throwing. Her parents were out of town for the weekend and she was taking advantage of it.
As she pushed the last table out of the way to make room for the dance floor. Sam realized she still needed to get dressed. “Ahh! They’re gonna be here and I’m not ready!” she exclaimed.
Sam took the steps two at a time as Chloe laughed at her. “Time for some music!”
“None of your crap! Please!” Sam exclaimed from her room.
Chloe put in Juvenile. “Oh, c’mon! Turn that crap off!” Sam yelled.
“As soon as this song’s over!”
Sam sighed as she changed into her GAP flares and her comfortable Old Navy t-shirt.
She came back downstairs just as the song ended. “Good! Now to turn this crap off!”
“Aw man!” Chloe exclaimed.
Sam went over to the stereo and put in her MTV Party to Go 2000 CD, Jock Jams V, and Amber.
“That’s better,” she smiled.
“Whatever,” Chloe replied.
Sam looked around in satisfaction. “Perfect.”
The doorbell rang and Sam and Cloe looked at each other.
“I got it!” Sam yelled.
“No, I do!”
Sam charged for the door just as Chloe did. Samantha got there first and opened the door, laughing.
“Uh…hi,” spoke one of the boys standing there.
“Yea, what he said,” spoke the other.
“Hi! I’m Sam and I’ll be your host for today!” She laughed at her corny joke while she walked back to her living room.
“Oh, it’s just you two,” Chloe spoke.
The taller boy made a face at her.
“Sam, this is Eric and Scott.”
“Hey,” Sam spoke.
Scott and Eric echoed her.
‘Eric’s kinda cute,’ Sam thought to herself.
“So, guys, let’s get this party started!” Chloe exclaimed.
A few more people arrived as Sam cranked up the music.
Sam began to grind with a friend of hers, hoping to get Eric jealous.
After the song ended, she moved away from her friend, not wanting to dance with him in that way any longer. She made up an excuse about going to get a glass of water.
Sam went in the kitchen as Chloe and Scott walked out. She smiled to herself as she watched them leave, knowing Cloe liked Scott.
Suddenly, a deep voice came from behind.
“Hey.”
Sam turned, holding her glass and the Brita pitcher, to see Eric.
“Hey,” she smiled.
“Lemme pout that for you,” he smiled.
Sam watched him pour her a glass and then himself on.
“So, um, who was that guy you were grinding with?”
“Oh, just a friend.”
“Like, a boyfriend?” Eric asked.
“No! More like a brother friend.”
“Oh…so is your boyfriend coming?”
“Nah…I don’t have a boyfriend…Did you invite your girlfriend?” Sam asked.
Eric shook his head. “Don’t have one.”
“Oh…that’s cool.”
As the convo grew down, a new fast paced song started.
“Do you want to dance?” Eric asked polietly.
Sam nodded. “Sure…let’s go.”
The two walked out and began to dance.

Meanwhile, on the porch, Chloe and Scott had been sitting and talking quietly until another boy walked up to the house.
“Dan! My man! What’s going on?” Scott exclaimed. “I haven’t seen you in forever!”
“Foreal dude! What’s going? Got a new girl I see…”
Scott blushed. “I don’t know…What about you?”
“Nah, nothing since I broke up with the last one…”
“Oh…Sam?” Then it clicked in Scott’s mind where he had seen Sam before. She used to go out with Dan!
“Well, I think I’m gonna go in…”
Before Scott could say anything, Dan had already entered the house.
“Dan used to go out with Sam?”
Scott nodded slowly. “Yea…”

Dan looked around the slightly crowded room, searching for someone he knew. Then, his eyes set on a certain face…a familiar face.
He walked over to the two who were now kissing in the middle of the room.
“Sam?”
The two pulled away and looked at him. “Dan! Oh my God! How are you? I haven’t seen you in so long!”
“Hey, Dan. What’s going? How’ve you been?”
“Pretty good. Missin’ Mom though…I didn’t tell you, did I?” he asked, his words targeted more at Sam.
“No, what happened?”
“She got in a car accident about a year ago and passed away.”
“Oh my gosh! Dan, I am so sorry!” Sam pulled her fingers away from Eric’s hand and gave Dan a hug. “I am so sorry.”
“Hey, it’s okay…That’s why I left though. I just left. I drove up to New York to be with my grandmother. I couldn’t face anyone here…”
‘Show Me the Meaning’ started up on Sam’s stereo.
“Do you want to dance? Just this once?”
Sam looked at Eric, then back at Dan.
“Go ‘head,” Eric smiled, trying to keep his jealousy down.
Sam smiled and walked out a few feet to slow dance with Dan.
At first, there was silence. Soon after, Sam spoke. “I’ve missed you…”
“I’ve missed you too. It’s just…I had to get out of here. There were too many memories and I regret it.”
Sam’s eyes met his. “You could have called…or wrote…or something.”
“I know…I’m not sure why I didn’t. I thought you’d hate me for leaving.”
“Dan, I didn’t hate you. You have no idea how long I cried for.”
“I’m sorry…Maybe we can try again…”
“Dan, a year is a long time. I had to get over you. I’m glad you came, but why now? Why all of a sudden?”
He gave a light shrug. “I realized how much I loved you, how much I missed you. I never stopped loving you, Sam. Never.”
