Jennifer laughed, rolling her eyes. "Zac..."
"Yeeth?" Zac replied with his fake lisp.
"Are you hiding something from me?" She grinned at her friend of thirteen years. Jenn was about nine months older than Zac, but they never let that come between them. Zac looked down, pouting. "I-I-I...NO!" he gave a fake cry.
Jenn laughed and shook her head. "And you call me messed up."
Zac grinned innocently. "I'm not messed up...your hair is."
Jennifer tightened her ponytail. "Shut up," she stuck her tongue out at him.
He grinned again. Jenn had been his buddy since before he could remember. The only one to stay with him through everything. Everything. Every fad, every friend, every girl, every opportunity. Especially the whole Hanson craze of the summer of '97. It was already May of '99 and she was still there. Zac had lost so many 'friends' that year. They said he was conceited and stuck up. Jennifer hadn't seen a difference. And what she says goes.
Zac looked at his friend. It would be the last day chillin' with her for a whole month. He hated leaving her, but he had to. She couldn't come with them. She'd miss out on school. He couldn't stay. They had no choice.
"What're you lookin' at shmuck?" Jenn asked with her fake attitude.
"Nothin much," Zac retorted.
Jenn pulled back in mock horror, giving a fake gasp while she was at it.
Zac laughed. "I'm gonna miss you, Freak."
"I'm gonna miss you too, Psycho," Jenn replied.
Zac smiled sadly and looked down at the ground.
"Aw, c'mon. Don't get all sappy. I'm not worth it."
"You're right."
"HEY!"
Zac laughed. "No, I mean I shouldn't get all sappy. I mean, I'll be back...and we'll hang out. Just like we always do."
Jenn nodded. "Yep. Friends 'til the end."
Zac looked over his friend again. Jennifer was a tomboy...she had been for the longest time. Most likely cause her best friend was a guy. Instead of playing house, they'd go out and catch frogs. They'd pulled a ton of pranks on Ike, Tay, and Tamera, Isaac's girlfriend of two years.
Zac perceived everything about her. Her dirty blonde hair was pulled back most of the time in a messy ponytail. She had a pair of bright blue eyes that didn't stand out much because she wore dark colors about all of the time. Her clothes were always dark and baggy.
Zac smiled a bit at her. Leaving was always so hard on him. To Jenn though, to Jenn it was nothing. Well, as far as he knew at least.
"Stop lookin' at me like that. It's freaky."
"Just like you, Freak," Zac grinned.
"Hey, I'm proud of my rep," Jenn replied. Around school, no one would mess with her. Stories were made about her, false ones, scaring people away. Jenn didn't care much. She didn't want to be involved with any of them. At all.
"I know you are," Zac smiled. "You're so proud of when you were sent to jail down in Mexico a few summers ago."
Jenn rolled her eyes. "Please, that rumor was SO last year," she replied, mocking the girls in her school.
Zac laughed. She couldn't stand those girls. "Like, fersure," he mocked.
He gave a soft sigh and looked down at his watch. It was seven-thirty already. He looked up at Jennifer again. "I...I gotta go..."
Jenn looked over at Zac. "Okay..."
"I guess I'll see ya around..."
Jenn nodded. "Okay."
Zac got up from the soft lawn of grass and began walking home, the sun setting behind him.
Once he was out of sight, Jennifer laid back on the grass. Her eyelids dropped sadly as a single tear rolled down her cheek.
