Potvin Demo

Hi Doc......The following is the progression of the work.
When I called you I was at level 1. But I could see that the Composition was going to work out. I was getting excited so I called you. ......Just to share

Ted was added in and the painting was comming together. The underpainting (underground colors are done with watercolor) will be covered up but even when the painting is finished some of the colors will show through.

I like to work around the whole painting at the same time, adjusting shapes, values and colors. Always stepping away from the painting(10 feet) to evaluate and to see if I am putting down what I remember form my time with your family.
I took the liberty of changing the postion of Ted to add to the spirit of the scene.

Working on the foreground and making sure the star"Anna" is the focal point of the painting.
Always adjusting colors and tempratures of the painting.
Things in the front have detail while the trees and water are the background with less detail. This is done so that your eye passes through the painting the way I want you to. ....I'm in the home stretch.

The final image you see is the scanned photo of the painting. The colors are much richer than I have shown here. But I think I have captured the moment as I saw it. With the help of many reference photos The painting becomes alive. Final touchups are still be made.
Any suggestions?
Don't forget to send me an email of the "Potvin Boys" I would like to put on the same frame .....if it works.
Final size is 24 inches high X 30 inches wide. the "Potvin Boys" is 24x36.

Here is a final scan of  the painting with touchups 2weeks later, when seen with a fresh eye.
I added some color here and there. and greyed some areas here and there. This is how it was given to the framer.
I think an artist could always touch up a painting, but then you lose something, and the painting begins to look laboured(not good)and overworked.
But now I love it
