Evolution 2: Far Off Promise
Platform: Dreamcast Publisher: UbiSoft Developer: Sting Projected Release Date: July 2000
As one of the first RPGs out of the gate for the Dreamcast, Evolution was a bit of a surprise. Providing a little bit of role playing sustenance for those looking to do some questing in the 128-bit world, it served its purpose admirably. Now a sequel is on the way by the same team, taking place shortly after the first, with Mag Launcher and the gang returning.
Taking place a right after the events of the original, Mag and his crew waste no time getting back down to business. So far Mag has made a bit of a name for himself, and has been asked to come to Museville to take part in some sort of project. From there on in the plot is anyone's guess. The game's opening sequence doesn't really do anything to shed light on what the story may contain. In the opening sequence Mag is chasing after a train. Onboard are Linear and Gre from the first Evolution, who try to stop the train and help Mag.
Visually the game is shaping up to look much like the first, but with slight improvements. Backgrounds and environments have been improved, now showing more detail. Also lighting and haze effects are being improved. Rounding out the visuals, the game is expected to run at 60 frames per second. Adding a little variety to it all, the game will have day / night sequences on top of this, adding an extra layer of realism, and leaving the gate open for scripting.
The battles and quests work pretty much the same way as they did in the original. When in a dungeon monsters will be visible, giving players more of an option as to whether or not the wish to engage in combat. The battles will once again center around the CyFrame system, where characters can be equipped with removable weapons, and level up their instruments of death allowing for more powerful attacks. Quests themselves will be assigned through the society again, then mosey off to the dungeon to do what you have to do.
Over halfway through localization, Evolution: Far Off Promise is well on its way. Its release isn't too far off, so it looks like an Evolution game will again help to fill the gaping hole that is the Dreamcast's RPG library.
