Parasite Eve II:
Platform: Publisher: Square EA Developer: Squaresoft Projected Release Date: September 2000
After completing the first Parasite Eve it was made quite clear that Square had a sequel in mind for the series. With all those glowing eyes in the theatre you just knew there was going to be trouble. Well trouble there is because Aya Brea is back once more to show those sinister mitochondria whose boss.
The game starts out on September 4, 2000, three years after the first game, and a group of mitochondria beings have been found in a Los Angeles skyscraper called Acropolis Tower. The SWAT team went in, but they were doomed from the beginning, with the command center losing contact with them. Aya Brea, now in the FBI as a member of MIST (Mitochondria Investigation and Suppression Team) has arrived to investigate.
Parasite Eve II is shaping up to be far more of an adventure game than an RPG. Square even referred to it as a cinematic adventure. Instead of seeing the screen go all blurry / swooshy when a battle is about to start, Aya and her attackers remain in the adventuring venues. Battles are fought in real time as Aya and the monsters constantly move around, attacking one another. There are also manipulatable items that can be used to fight with, like shooting a circuit board to make it explode and damage a monster. Also, Aya is equipped with a sensory detector that allows her to determine the position of enemies (provided they're close enough). Battles will be avoidable too, but this will cause the player to lose Bounty Points.
There are more pretty graphics to be enjoyed in Parasite Eve II as well. With very nice pre-rendered backgrounds and phenomenal CG cut scenes, the usual Squaresoft visual splendor is still intact. Which is so much the better for players to take a gander at the new characters in the sequel as well as to soak in the effects of all the new weapons Aya will have at her disposal (like a Assault Rifle M4A1, a GPS, and a SMG_MPS among others).
Parasite Eve II looks like it will be a lot peppier than the original, with its combat system and ability to avoid enemies. As such, these factors could help remedy some of the problems many complained about of the original and its slow pace.
